HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall volleyball team fought hard and came away with a four-set win (25-18, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19) over the UAB Blazers on Senior Night in the Cam Henderson Center on Thursday. Senior Amber Weber recorded her fourth-straight match with 20 or more digs with 23.

The Thundering Herd end the regular season with an overall record of 18-9 and 9-5 in Conference USA action. The Blazers fall to 12-14 and 4-9 in conference play with one match to go, at No. 19 WKU on Saturday. UAB has been eliminated for postseason contention.

"It was a good four-set win," Herd head coach Ari Aganus said. "There were some frustrating pieces. We kinda fell asleep a little bit there in the third set and allowed the other team to dictate the momentum which wasn't fun, but UAB is a tough team and they battle every single day. We didn't respect them enough.

"I am happy with the end result. Ciara (Debell) stepped up toward the end, Amber (Weber) played lights out as always, and Sarah (Schank) we have been leaning on all year. So it was nice to see the distribution we had but we are just one step closer to finessing a couple of pieces before conference."

Redshirt junior Ciara Debell recorded 21 kills to lead the Herd including 10 coming in the fourth set. It was the third-straight match for the reigning C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week with 20 or more kills. Debell also hit at a .391 clip and had 10 digs for her 12th double-double of the year. Sophomore Sarah Schank was second with 14 kills and also had 17 digs as she performed well on the defensive side with several diving plays to keep the Herd rally alive. Senior Ivana Trencheva performed well in her final home match with four kills, a .300 hitting percentage and a block assist.

Junior Syndey Lostumo led with 26 assists, added 12 digs and one service ace. Sophomore Gabrielle Coulter had 16 assists and seven digs. Weber increased her consecutive matches streak with 10 or more digs to 30-straight. The senior has 485 digs this season and increased her average to 4.95 per set.

Marshall tallied 10 total team blocks, its third-straight match with 10 or more. Sophomore Isa Dostal led with six total, one solo and five assists. Debell and Schank each had three total blocks and junior Destiny Leon chipped in with two.

The Blazers came out in the first set and immediately took a 3-0 lead. Marshall then rallied with a 3-0 run to tie the set, but UAB continued to push forward. Finally, the Herd tied the set at 8-8 and then took the lead for good on the next point on a Blazer error. Marshall had runs of 4-0 and 5-0 to eventually go up 17-9. The Herd kept a five to seven-point lead through the remainder of the set for the 25-18 win. Schank had five kills in the period and Weber had seven digs.

In the second set, Marshall jumped out to the early lead and UAB rallied. The Herd was leading 9-6 when the Blazers used a 4-0 run to go up 10-9. Marshall eventually regained the lead at 12-11 on a kill from Debell. The Herd went on a 5-0 run to go up 15-11. The teams traded points back-and-forth with Marshall keeping just ahead of the visitor. The Blazers cut the deficit to one, 18-17, but again the Herd came through with the tough points on some long rallies to stay ahead. A kill from Debell moved it to set-point and then Dostal finished it with her only kill of the set. Schank played well defensively in the second set with seven digs and one block.

The third set had six ties and two lead changes as the Blazers fought to hold off the sweep. UAB took the lead at 13-12 and held out for the rest of the set. Marshall made things interesting after the Blazers moved it to set-point at 24-20. A kill by Debell, followed by a block from Dostal and Schank, then a UAB error put the Herd within one at 24-23. However, the Blazers finally scored the last point to force a fourth set.

The fourth set began as a battle and looking like the match could head for a fifth set. The score was tied six times and there was one lead change. Marshall took the lead for good on a kill by Schank with the score at 10-9. The Herd later rolled off a 7-0 run that featured four kills from Debell. However, UAB still had some fight left as the Blazers used a 5-0 run to close back within two points, 18-16. Debell's eighth kill of the set ended the UAB run. The Herd kept inching closer to match-point and led 23-19 on Schank's 14th kill of the night. Debell then delivered with the final two points to give Marshall the win.

The Herd now gets to sit and wait the final results of the rest of Conference USA, with more matches on Saturday, to find out its seed in the C-USA Tournament. The tournament takes place Nov. 22-24 in Houston, Texas hosted by Rice.
