Men’s Basketball Closes Out 2019 with Win over Duquesne at Cleveland Classic

West collects third game this season of 20 or more points

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Marshall men's basketball (6-7) dominated the Duquesne Dukes (10-2) in a team-effort 83-61 victory at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Sunday afternoon in Cleveland as part of the Cleveland Classic.

"We talked at halftime that we were playing well, defensively really well," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "We also talked about finishing games. We hadn't done that with this team yet. Tonight I thought we kept that pace up. The defense was strong and we made shots. If we make shots we're a really good ball club. Duquesne is well coached. I'm happy for our kids."

Junior Jarrod West led the way with a team-high 22 points on an efficient shooting night by going 7-for-13 from the field, including 4-of-6 on three-point attempts. The guard also made four of his five free throws, had a game-high six assists and brought down four boards.

Darius George followed West up with 19 points in only 23 minutes of play. The junior forward went 8-for-10 from the field, making three shots from beyond the arc, and was tied for the team-high in rebounds with Goran Miladinovic with eight.

Taevion Kinsey capped off a trio of Thundering Herd student-athletes in double-figure scoring with 11 as the sophomore guard also had five assists and four rebounds on his stat line.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Taylor led the way with three steals and redshirt sophomore Iran Bennett rejected five shots in the win.

Duquesne scored the first point of the game, but its lead lasted a mere 25 seconds as a three-point play by West put the Herd on top and it did not trail the rest of the game.

A Thundering Herd 14-2 run gave it a 12-point lead, 21-9, with just over 10 minutes to go in the opening stanza. It was the largest lead for the Herd in the first half. MU went into the break with a 38-29 lead.

The Dukes trailed by eight early in the second half of play, but after a free-throw and layup from West and a dunk by Kinsey, Marshall pushed its lead to double figures, 51-38, with 13:56 on the clock and its lead never diminished to fewer than 10 points the rest of the game.

MU used an 11-0 run in the final five minutes to push its lead to a game-high 24 points, 77-53, and closed out the game by a 22-point margin.

NOTES
Marshall is now 11-9 in neutral site games under D'Antoni.

Miladinovic and George each tied their respective career-highs in rebounds with 8.

Taylor has had at three steals in each of his first four games with the Herd.
