Paladins win 7-0, Marshall loses fifth straight
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall's two-match homestand did not get off on the right foot, as Furman (8-1, 0-0 SOCON) earned a 7-0 win over the Thundering Herd (2-6, 0-1 C-USA) Friday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
"Give Furman a lot of credit," head coach John Mercer said. "They are one of the best teams we have played this season."
Marshall struggled early in doubles play, as the visiting Paladins jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead. Liz Stefancic and Madi Ballow were defeated by Madison Dillon and Katty Weymouth, 6-2, while Victoria Walter and Matilde Mulatero lost to Taylor Melville and Carol Elizabeth Kerman, 6-2. Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych were tied in their match against Julia Adams and Katarina Kozarov, 4-4, before it went abandoned after Furman earned the doubles point.
Furman continued its hot start from doubles play and carried the momentum into singles play, taking all six singles matches. Smith fell in straight sets to Kozarov, ranked 33rd in the nation, 6-1, 6-1. Dankanych was defeated by Adams, 6-4, 6-1, while Walter fell to Weymouth, 6-2, 6-1, in what turned out to be the clinching match. Ballow was defeated by Melville in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Stefancic forced a second-set tiebreak before falling to Dillon, 6-3, 7-6(2). In the final match of the evening, Mulatero was defeated by Georgie Walker, 6-0, 6-1.
"I thought we played decent today as a team," Mercer said. "I know the scores won't show it, but we're making progress and that's a good sign to see."
