Gore nine away from 2,000 points

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion's women's basketball team jumped out to a 14-point first quarter lead and never looked back as it defeated visiting Marshall 79-53 Saturday afternoon in a wire-to-wire victory at the Ted Constant Center.

The Monarchs (18-9, 9-6 Conference USA) evened the season series and its league standing with the Thundering Herd (15-13, 9-6) via the victory.

Ajah Wayne led five ODU players in double figures with 21 points, while Aziah Hudson had 15 and Dejah Carter and Taylor Edwards both chipped in 11 apiece. Amari Young (12 points, 11 rebounds) had a double-double off the bench. Seven of Young's caroms came on the offensive end of the floor.

Wayne and Hudson connected on nine of the Monarchs' 13 3-pointers, a total that was one off their school-record set earlier this season. Edwards notched a game-high seven assists.

Marshall's Shayna Gore posted 19 points and now has 1,991 in her career for the Thundering Herd. Khadaijia Brooks led the Thundering Herd with seven rebounds.

The Thundering Herd outscored the Monarchs 33-31 in the second half and had a 12-0 advantage in fast break points. ODU led in second chance points, 21-8.

"Give ODU a lot of credit," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "They were tuned up and ready to play. They were way faster, quicker, more physical to the ball than what we were. We were very passive. Our rebounding was honestly pathetic, quite frankly. Early in the game, that's (the lack of rebounding) really where it got away from us."

Marshall will host FIU (5-23, 2-13) Thursday evening at the Cam Henderson Center in the regular season finale for both schools. Gore, Taylor Porter, Logan Fraley, Tana Driver and Jovana Vucetic will be honored before the game for Senior Day.
