Gore finishes with 2,081 career points
BOONE, N.C. – Pre Stanley scored a career-high 28 points and tied a career-best with 10 field goals to lead host Appalachian State in an 83-71 win over the Marshall women's basketball team Monday evening in the quarterfinal round of the Women's Basketball Invitational.
The Mountaineers improved to 20-14 and will play Campbell in the semifinals. The Camels defeated Tennessee Tech 70-62 in Buies Creek, N.C. on Monday evening.
The Thundering Herd finished its season at 17-15.
Both teams put all five starters in double figures. Lainey Gosnell had 15 for Appalachian, while Madi Story and Ashley Polacek had 13 apiece. Bayley Plummer was a handful down low for the Thundering Herd as she posted 11 points and tied her career-high in rebounding (21), a mark she set against Marshall earlier this season. In three career games against Marshall, she has averaged 14.3 points, 20 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots.
Marshall was led by Shayna Gore's 17 points, while Khadaijia Brooks had 15, Taylor Porter posted 13, Taylor Pearson recorded 12 and Kristen Mayo finished with 10. Pearson and Porter led the team with six rebounds apiece.
The Mountaineers came into the game shooting 65.4 percent from the free throw line, but made 88.2 percent on Monday (15-17).
Gore converted a layup to put the Thundering Herd up by three (11-8) at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter.
Plummer scored on a putback two and a half minutes later and that gave the Mountaineers a two-point lead (15-13) they would never relinquish.
The lead grew to as many as 15 (36-21) on a Tierra Wilson 3-pointer with 2:07 left in the second, but Marshall charged back in the third quarter and cut the advantage to one, the last time on a Pearson baseline jumper (55-54) with 8:32 to go. However, Stanley came down on the next possession and converted a three-point play to push the margin back to four and the Mountaineers gradually nudged the game out of reach during the balance of the quarter.
The two teams combined for 55 points in the fourth period.
Appalachian State held a 49-34 advantage on the glass and a 34-24 margin on points in the paint. The Mountaineers also boasted a 17-7 edge on points off turnovers even though Marshall committed just eight miscues, two more than the home team.
Gore finished her career with 2,081 points, a mark that is third all-time in program history and ties her for sixth in Conference USA's all-time record book.
