Serbian national team player to join Thundering Herd
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's tennis team has added Nevena Sokovic (Belgrade, Serbia) as a signee for the 2019-20 season and welcomes her to the Thundering Herd family, the program announced Monday.
Â
"The team, (assistant coach) Jason (Winegar) and I are very excited that Nevena has committed to play her college tennis at Marshall," head coach John Mercer said. "She will have an immediate positive impact in the top half of our lineup. She is an excellent player who will excel both in the classroom and as a player in Conference USA and nationally."
Â
Sokovic comes to Marshall from Belgrade, Serbia, where she is a current member of the Serbian national team. In her home country, she has always maintained a top-3 national ranking in her age division. When she was 15, Sokovic was one of only eight players selected to play the Tennis Europe Junior Masters, an event designed to host the top 16 and under players in Europe. Â Sokovic reached a career-high ITF Junior ranking of 319th in the world and currently sits at 1049th in the WTA.
Â
"Marshall is a very good school," Sokovic said when asked about joining the Thundering Herd. "I have heard a lot of great things about the team and the coaches. I am excited and happy to be part of the Herd family. My goal is to try my hardest on the court and off and represent Marshall to the best of my abilities."
Â
Sokovic becomes the first Marshall signee from Serbia since Marija Bogicevic joined the Herd prior to the 2014-15 season. She also continues the pipeline from Europe to Huntington, as three current members of the team hail from Europe.
Â
Marshall's 2019-20 roster currently sits at seven, as all six players on the 2018-19 roster are currently slated to return to the program (four freshmen, one sophomore and one junior).
