Thundering Herd takes on UTEP Wednesday
FRISCO, Tx. – Marshall's women's basketball team will be the six seed when it takes the floor at the Ford Center for its first-round game at the 2019 Conference USA Tournament.
The Thundering Herd (16-13, 10-6) will face 11th-seeded UTEP (8-21, 5-11) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT on Court B in a contest that will be carried on ESPN+.
Marshall actually tied for fifth place in the league's final standings, but lost the tiebreaker to Old Dominion (20-9, 10-6) because it had a lower winning percentage (.333, 1-2) against the combination of third-seeded Middle Tennessee (20-9, 11-5) and fourth-seeded WKU (17-13, 11-5) than did the Monarchs, who were .500 (1-1). The Blue Raiders and Lady Hilltoppers tied for third. Middle Tennessee won that tiebreaker by virtue of its victory over second-seeded UAB (24-5, 12-4).
Both Marshall and ODU lost to top-seeded Rice (25-3, 16-0) and the Blazers.
Should the Thundering Herd win Wednesday, it would face the Blue Raiders Thursday at 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT. That game will also be played on Court B and will air on ESPN+.
The semifinals are played Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 CT and 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. Both of those tilts will be carried by Stadium and will be contested on Court A.
The championship game will be played Saturday on Court A at 5:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network.
Marshall's last tourney matchup with UTEP was in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 2013, when the fifth-seeded Miners pulled out a 70-59 victory over the 12-seeded Thundering Herd in first-round action.
Two of the Herd's three trips to the C-USA Semifinals have come when it has been seeded sixth (2008, 2016). In 2009, Marshall made the semis from the seven seed.
