HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Former Marshall women's basketball star Shayna Gore has signed a professional contract to play for Unicaja Baloncesto in Malaga, Spain. The team is a member of Liga Femenina 2, the second division of Spanish Women's Basketball.

"Super excited to sign to Unicaja in Malaga City, Spain," Gore said. "It's always been a dream to play professional basketball, now I get to do it across the world. Spain, let's get it!

"Thank you Marshall University. Because of this school I will walk away a better person and have memories with me forever. It's been a fun ride. I will always bleed green. Go Herd!"

Gore put her name all throughout the Marshall record books during her four seasons with the Herd. She finished as Marshall's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 303 and had three of the top four single-season totals of three's drained including a team record 96 in 2018-19. Her 303 made three-pointers is more than twice the total of the old record (146) set by Marshall Athletics Hall of Famer Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (2002-06).

The Logan, W.Va., native became the third player in program history to reach the 2,000-point plateau and is third all-time in team history with 2,081. Gore reached the 2,000-point mark against FIU on Senior Day in front of the home crowd. She is also second all-time in field goals made (721), sixth in steals (194), assists (319), free throws made (336) and seventh in three-point percentage (36.1%). Her 642 points scored in her senior year ranks fourth-best in Herd history.

Gore capped off her Marshall career in helping the Herd turn in an eight-win improvement from 2017-18 to 2018-19 and was named first team All-Conference USA. Marshall accepted an invitation the WBI Postseason Tournament and defeated Davidson (67-64) in the first round before falling to Appalachian State in the second round.

Unicaja Baloncesto is just going into its third year of existence as the organization has had a men's team since the late 1970s. It took Unicaja just two seasons to be promoted to Liga Femenina 2 as the squad finished second in 2017-18 – its first year on the court – and then first in 2018-19. The 2019-20 season tips off in October.

Malaga, Spain has a long history as one of the oldest cities in Europe and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It is believed to have been founded around 770 B.C. Malaga is located right along the Mediterranean Sea in southern Spain, not far from the Straits of Gibraltar. The city also has a strong cultural and arts heritage and is the birthplace of painter/sculptor Pablo Picasso and actor Antonio Banderas.
