Women’s Tennis Begins Action at Thunder in the Mountains

Marshall wins four matches on day one
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's tennis began the 2019-20 season at day one of the first Thunder in the Mountains on Friday (Sept. 20) in Charleston, W.Va.
"It was good to get started and get through the first day," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "It was nice to play against other teams instead of practicing against each other. We saw good progress from our returnees. I thought they did a really good job in the singles once they got settled in. I thought our freshmen fought super hard. I think we'll see a lot of improvement from them as we head deeper into the season."
Action began at the Charleston YMCA as rain forced the tournament indoors for doubles. The team of senior Daniela Dankanych and junior Anna Smith took down a team from Toledo for a MU win in doubles.
The rain dissipated and singles moved back outdoors at the Schoenbaum Tennis Courts. Marshall faced Youngstown State to close out the day in singles splitting six matches. Smith, Dankanych, and Madi Ballow each picked up straight set wins on courts 1-3, respectively. Liz Stefancic was forced to retire from her match on court four. Jutte Van Hansewyck and Kara Joseph made their debuts for the Herd on courts five and six.
