Herd opens C-USA play at home against Louisiana Tech

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Conference USA released its updated women's basketball league schedule for the 2021 season Tuesday, following its announcement the previous week of the format changes for the schedule and conference tournament.

The schedule for this season will feature each team hosting four opponents for a two-game series, with a day break in between, and travelling to four different opponents for a two-game series. There will also be a home-and-home with a rival to limit exposure to COVID-19 during travel this season.

Marshall opens Conference USA play at home against Louisiana Tech, Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. The Herd's other home, two-game series will be versus FIU (Jan. 21 & 23), Old Dominion (Feb. 4 & 6) and Rice (Feb. 18 & 20). The four opponents that Marshall will travel to will be Charlotte (Jan. 7 & 9), Florida Atlantic (Jan. 28 & 30), Middle Tennessee (Feb. 11 & 13) and North Texas (Feb. 25 & 27). The Herd's home-and-home will be against WKU, first at home on Jan. 14 and then in Bowling Green on Jan. 16.

The final weekend of the regular season is set as an open date to help with the possibility of games needing to be postponed and moved.

The Conference USA Championship format returns to its familiar 12-team field. The top 12 regular season finishers in league play qualify for the tournament which will be played at The Star in Frisco, Texas, March 10-13.

Marshall returns its top three scorers in sophomore Savannah Wheeler (13.4 ppg), senior Taylor Pearson (11.1 ppg) and senior Kristen Mayo (10.9 ppg). Wheeler was named to the C-USA All-Freshman Team this past season after turning in a great rookie campaign. Along with leading the Herd in scoring, she also led in assists (83), steals (41), field goals made (113), free throws made (130), free throws attempted (155) and free throw percentage (.839).

Pearson stepped up tremendously in her junior year and was second in rebounds with 5.2 per game. She led the squad in field goal percentage (.424), three-pointers made (53) and three-point field goal percentage (.396).

Mayo didn't miss a single game for the third-straight year in 2019-20 and led the Herd in minutes per game with 31.0 including a season-high 42 minutes in Marshall's 71-67, overtime victory over Southern Miss in the first round of the Conference Championships. Mayo also scored a season-high 22 in the win.

The Herd overall returns seven players and adds in a mix of eight talented athletes.
