HUNTINGTON, W.Va. --Â The Marshall University women's swimming team will be traveling to Queens University of Charlotte Saturday for its first meet of the 2020-21 season. The meet will take place at 11 a.m. at the Levine Aquatic Center.
Â
This will the Herd's first meet since COVID-19 abruptly ended the 2019-20 season.
Â
"We are very fortunate to have the support of our athletic department to compete this fall," Marshall head swimming and diving coach Ian Walsh said. "As we all navigate these uncharted waters, we've appreciated the guidance our local health department and athletics has given our staff leading into this season."
Â
Walsh and second-year assistant coach Taylor Counter oversee a team which added 14 freshmen to the program this off-season competing in their first collegiate meet Saturday.
Â
"Taylor and I have seen some positive things through the past couple weeks, and it's been fun to see our young team get acclimated to the training," Walsh said. "Many of our women haven't raced since March leading into this competition. This weekend will be a great learning experience for this group, especially our 12 freshmen, as we look to find our competitive identity this season."
Â
Queens University of Charlotte is a member of the NCAA Division II and won the NCAA DII Swimming Championships in March.
Â
"Queens has a very talented group and we're looking forward to standing toe to toe with them on Saturday," Walsh said. "When you go up against a team that has won the Division II NCAA Championships for five consecutive years, you understand you'll need bring your best. I'm excited for our women and look forward to taking advantage of this opportunity to compete that many teams across the country don't have right now."
