Thundering Herd’s defensive coordinator honored
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall defensive coordinator and safeties coach Brad Lambert has been named a candidate for the 2020 Broyles Award, which honors college football's top assistant coaches.
Â
The 56 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division I programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
Â
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.
Â
Lambert's Thundering Herd defensive unit has been at or near the top of numerous statistical categories this season. Marshall ranks in the top two nationally in scoring defense (1st, 11.4), rushing defense (2nd, 73.0) and total defense (253.9). The Thundering Herd is also tied for ninth nationally with nine fumble recoveries.
Â
Marshall (7-1 overall, 4-1 Conference USA) has been especially stingy in the first quarter against the run, yielding just 76 yards on 54 carries (1.41 avg.), the best mark in the nation. The longest rush during that stretch has been for 10 yards with just six first downs. The Thundering Herd is allowing 2.35 yards per rush, which right now, would be the fifth-best single season mark in C-USA history.
