Louisiana Tech Wins Defensive Struggle

2/8/2020 6:11:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Clemons has career-high six steals

RUSTON, La. – Amber Dixon and Grayson Bright combined for 30 points to lead the host Louisiana Tech women's basketball team to a 60-50 win over visiting Marshall Saturday afternoon at the Thomas Assembly Center in Ruston.

The win lifted the Lady Techsters to 11-11 overall and 3-8 in Conference USA, while Marshall dropped to 9-13 and 4-7 in the league.

Dixon scored 16 points and Bright added 14 with nine rebounds. Raizel Guinto posted 11 points on three 3-pointers. Anna Larr Roberson had an impressive game off the bench with eight points and 14 rebounds (10 defensive).

Marshall was led in scoring by Savannah Wheeler's 14 points (10 in the first half) and four assists. Taylor Pearson and Princess Clemons had six rebounds apiece and the latter also posted a career-high six steals.

Neither team shot a great percentage from the field and the Thundering Herd, in particular, was plagued by struggles from Kristen Mayo (2-for-12), Pearson (2-for-11) and Clemons (1-for-9). Marshall shot just 2-for-16 from the field in the first quarter.

Marshall pulled to within three points four times but Louisiana Tech used an 8-0 run in the fourth to build a 13-point lead with 1:12 left.

The Lady Techsters, who were without the services of leading scorer Keiunna Walker (12.3 ppg) who was attending to a family matter Saturday, won the rebounding battle 46-38.

"Days like today illustrate why we have to come with the same intensity and approach, every time out," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "I just didn't think we did that today. Give credit to Louisiana Tech for making it difficult on us, offensively, but we just didn't convert what was needed to get the win."

Marshall will be back in the Cam Henderson Center on Thursday at 6 p.m. when UTSA (6-16, 2-9) comes to town. The Roadrunners were defeated 67-47 at home by Charlotte (15-7, 6-5) on Saturday.
