Marshall and Southern Miss finished tied for eighth, along with Florida Atlantic, with a 7-11 conference record. However, the Herd won the tiebreakers to grab the eighth-seed. Marshall finished the season 12-17 overall.
The Herd traveled to Hattiesburg, Miss., back on Feb. 6 and came away with an 80-65 win. Junior Taylor Pearson led the way in scoring with 21. Senior Princess Clemons added 14 points while freshman Savannah Wheeler and junior Kristen Mayo had 12 each. Clemons also grabbed eight boards. Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks scored eight points, grabbed five rebounds and had four steals.
The winner of Marshall and Southern Miss will move on to take on the No. 1 seed, Rice Owls, on Thursday, March 12 at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT, on Court A and will be aired on Stadium. The Championship game is set for Saturday, March 14, at 5:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. CT and will be on CBS Sports Network.
Marshall and Southern Miss have not met in the Conference USA Tournament since the semifinals in 2009, hosted in New Orleans. The Herd as the No. 7 seed advanced to the semifinal round after defeating No. 10 Memphis, 76-57, and then No. 2 UTEP, 72-70 in overtime. However, the Golden Eagles won the semifinal matchup in a close one, 56-54. Southern Miss lost in the championship, 65-54, to UCF in overtime.
The last time Marshall was the No. 8 seed was in 2007, in Tulsa, Okla., where the Herd fell to No. 9 Houston, 71-58.
