Catlettsburg, Ky. native earns honor

DALLAS, Tx. – Marshall's Savannah Wheeler was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team, the league office announced Monday morning.
 
The Catlettsburg, Kentucky native is just the fourth Marshall women's player to earn the league's honor, following Alyssa Hammond (2007), Shay Weaver (2012) and Ashley Saintigene (2017).
 
Wheeler, who is sixth in the league in free throw percentage (83.0), 13th in scoring (13.2), 3-point percentage (34.6), 3-pointers made per game (1.6) and 14th in assists per game (2.8), also leads Marshall in field goals (110), free throws made (117) and steals (37).
 
She was also named C-USA Freshman of the Week twice this season and is currently the only freshman, nationally, who ranks in the top 50 in free throw percentage (51st, 83.0) and free throws made (60th, 117).
 
Wheeler, who scored in double figures in all but six of Marshall's games this season, will lead the eighth-seeded Thundering Herd against ninth-seeded Southern Miss Wednesday at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT in first-round action at the Conference USA Tournament in Frisco, Texas.
