HUNTINGTON, W.Va.
– FIU's women's basketball team made nine of its 14 3-pointers in the first half as the Panthers defeated Marshall 75-60 in a wire-to-wire win Thursday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.

FIU improved to 7-6 overall and 4-3 in C-USA, while Marshall dropped to 3-6 and 2-5 in the league.

The Panthers had four players reach double figures, led by Kyla Nelson, who had 21 points. Alma Danielsson (15), Fujika Nimmo (12) and Jiselle Thomas (10) also hit that mark, while Emerald Ekpiteta posted a game-high 10 rebounds. Raquel Ferrer-Bernad added six assists.

Nelson, who came into the game shooting 41 percent from 3-point range on the season, made 5-for-9 from deep, while Danielsson went 4-for-5.

Savannah Wheeler's 20 points led Marshall, as did her four assists. Lorelei Roper paced the Thundering Herd with six rebounds.

FIU built a quick 13-0 lead at the contest's outset, resulting in a timeout by Marshall head coach Tony Kemper just two minutes, 36 seconds in. Marshall, though, rallied to score 16 of the period's final 23 points to close to within four (20-16) through 10 minutes of play.

The Panthers started quickly again in the second period as Nelson, Danielsson (two) and Ferrer-Bernad all connected from deep to give the visitors a 32-21 advantage at the 5:09 mark.

FIU led by 11 (41-30) at the half.

Marshall got back into the game in the third quarter, whittling the Panther lead to six (51-45) on a Wheeler three-point play at the 5:25 mark, but FIU kept the Herd off the scoreboard the rest of the way to take a 60-45 lead into the final period.

The margin did not get below 14 in the fourth quarter.

For the game, the Panthers made 50.9 of their field goal attempts (27-for-53) to Marshall's 34.5 percent (20-for-58).

Both teams struggled from the free throw line. Marshall made 55.6 percent (15-for-27) and FIU went 7-for-15 (46.7 percent).

"I just thought (FIU) was very aggressive," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "Clearly they were ready to go. We gave shots to the wrong people. When we left them open, they made us pay and we have to do a better job tomorrow. Any little mistake that we made on our end, they really made us pay. They are a group that is playing really well. 15 (Kyla Nelson) is really good. I think she is one of the best guards in our league."

The second game of the series is tomorrow at 3 p.m.
