POSTGAME TONY KEMPER PRESS CONFERENCE

CHARLOTTE, N.C.
 – Charlotte's Octavia Jett-Wilson, Molina Williams and Mariah Linney combined for 51 of the team's 75 points and the host 49ers knocked off visiting Marshall 75-54 Friday evening at Halton Arena.

The 49ers improved to 2-4 and 1-0 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd fell to 2-3 and 1-2 in the league.

The victory was the 100th home victory for Charlotte head coach Cara Consuegra.

Jett-Wilson finished with a game-high 19 points, while Williams gave the 49ers a big boost, making six of her seven field goal attempts. That also included a 3-pointer to go with four successful free throw attempts for her 17 points. All 15 of Linney's points came from beyond the 3-point arc (5-for-9). Williams and Dara Pearson tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight and leading scorer Jada McMillian shook off a slow offensive night to post 10 assists.

Savannah Wheeler was the only player in double figures for Marshall, as she registered 16 points. CC Mays posted three steals.

The Thundering Herd kept it tight in the first half, leading for one minute, 12 seconds. Wheeler's three-point play at the 2:58 mark of the second quarter tied the contest at 23 but Charlotte's Williams got a putback and Jacee Busick connected on a 3-pointer to set the halftime margin at five (28-23).

The third quarter proved to be decisive as the home team outscored the visitors 23-11.

The margin grew to as many as 26 (72-46) on a Jett-Wilson three-point play with 2:56 left in the contest.

Both teams struggled from the perimeter in the first half. Marshall made just one of its 12 shots from deep, while Charlotte connected on just two of 10.

The second half went differently. Marshall was better (3-for-10), but Charlotte made eight of its 15 shots from downtown and that helped steadily grow the 49ers' advantage.

Charlotte also had a 24-13 edge in bench scoring, thanks to Williams' contributions.

"I didn't think our effort was very good, especially in the second half," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "You have to give Charlotte credit. They played us well defensively and we couldn't get much going. I think sometimes when you go through that, it makes it hard to keep doing the things that help you win a basketball game. I think we got extremely loose with simple things. We probably showed our youth a little bit in terms of organization, and against a good team like that on the road … you can't play like that."

"They made a run on us in the second half, hit a lot of shots, and we weren't guarding anybody. Most of the time Mariah Linney is standing out there without a matchup on her and you can't survive like that. We will watch some film tonight and will hopefully grow and be better tomorrow."

The two teams will battle again tomorrow. Tip time is 3 p.m.
