No. 5 Men’s Soccer Travels to Old Dominion

Conference USA match set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
NORFOLK, Va. – The 5th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team hits the road for the first time in three weeks for a Conference USA match against the Old Dominion Monarchs. Kickoff from the ODU Soccer Complex is scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the contest at 5-1-3 overall and 0-0-2 in C-USA action. The Monarchs are 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in league play. The last time Marshall played at the ODU Soccer Complex, the Herd won the 2019 Conference USA Tournament Title, 1-0 over Charlotte.

The Herd is coming off a 2-0 home victory over Butler on Wednesday night. Graduate-student Pedro Dolabella scored both goals, his first career two-score game. Senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle notched four saves as Marshall recorded its third-straight shutout and fourth clean sheet of the season. Head coach Chris Grassie earned his 50th win with the Herd and became the fastest to 50 in program history, reaching the milestone in his 88th contest. Coach Grassie has 149 wins in his coaching career, coming to Marshall with 99 during his tenure at the University of Charleston.
The Herd finished its four-game homestand 2-0-2. Along with Butler, the other win came against No. 20 Akron with the draws versus No. 4 West Virginia and No. 10 Kentucky.
The last time Marshall was on the road was Sept. 11 at (RV) Bowling Green. The Herd won 1-0 as Dolabella blasted home the score with one minute and 33 seconds left in regulation.
Senior Vinicius Fernandes continues to lead the team in scoring with 16 total points. He also leads the team in assists with six, he assisted on both goals against Butler, and is tied with Dolabella for the team lead in goals with five. Dolabella has four assists and 14 total points. Senior Vitor Dias has four goals, five assists and 13 points. The three natives of Brazil have combined to score 14 of Marshall's 22 goals.
Semmle has allowed 10 goals this year to go along with 28 saves. He sports a 1.17 goals against average and a .737 save percentage. Semmle has three shutouts this season and 14 in his career, good for third all-time in program history.
The Herd's offense is among the best in the country in 2021 ranking fourth in total assists (25), fifth in assists per game (2.78), ninth in total points (69), tenth in scoring offense (2.44 goals per game), 12th in total goals (22) and 17th in goal differential (12). Individually, Fernandes, Dias and Dolabella rank in the top 20 in the NCAA in several different categories as well.
After the Herd's match at Old Dominion, Marshall heads back out on the road with a trip down to the Sunshine State against Florida Atlantic on Saturday, Oct. 9.
The Opponent
The Monarchs are on a three-match, non-winning skid after a 1-1 draw against Coastal Carolina and then back-to-back losses to VCU (2-0) and Florida Atlantic (3-0). Old Dominion's last victory came at George Mason on Sept. 14, 2-1.
Against the Owls, The Monarchs were outshot 13-9 and 9-2 on goal. This season Old Dominion has been outscored 13-6, outshot 84-76 and 40-30 on goal. Eliot Goldthorp and Karan Mandair have two goals each with Owen Ruddy and Josh Thacker scoring one each.
Djibril Doumbia has been the only goalkeeper in the net for the Monarchs. He has played all 650 minutes, allowed 13 goals, has 27 saves, a 1.80 goals against average and a .675 save percentage. In the last meeting between Marshall and Old Dominion, Doumbia had a great day in goal with nine saves and allowed just one score in the 1-1 draw.
Head coach Alan Dawson is in his 25th season in Norfolk and has 250 wins with the Monarchs as well as 379 overall in his coaching career.
