No. 2 Men’s Soccer Welcomes South Carolina for Senior Day

Kickoff from Hoops Family Field set for Saturday at 7 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 2nd-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is back in action at Hoops Family Field for the final time in the 2021 regular season on Saturday versus the South Carolina Gamecocks. Kickoff for Senior Day is set for 7 p.m.
 
The Thundering Herd comes into the match at 10-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 in Conference USA action. The Gamecocks enter at 5-7-2 overall and 1-3-2 in league play. The NCAA Men's Soccer Committee released its Top 16 Rankings on Friday for the early seedings for the NCAA Tournament. The Top 16 teams get a first-round bye once the NCAA Tournament kicks off in mid-November. Marshall was ranked No. 4 behind Georgetown, Oregon State and Washington.

Saturday night, the Herd will be honoring its 2021 senior class that consists of 10 players that have thus far helped lead the program to be ranked in 26-straight polls, back-to-back Conference USA Championships and of course the 2020 College Cup National Championship. The players to be honored will be goalkeeper Oliver Semmle, defender Ryan Sirk, center back Nathan Dossantos, midfielder Vinicius Fernandes, forward Ibrahima Diop, midfielder Pedro Dolabella, forward Noah Raphael, defender Davi Edwards, right back Jan-Erik Leinhos, and midfielder Vitor Dias. Together this magnificent group of players has appeared in 409 matches, made 333 starts, logged over 30,100 minutes on the pitch, scored 61 goals, and have 56 assists.
 
Marshall is coming off a 2-1, overtime victory at Charlotte on Oct. 23. With the win, the Herd gained three more points in the standings and currently sit in second, two points behind No. 17 FIU. Leinhos scored the first goal for Marshall with a blast from long range, with Fernandes and redshirt junior Milo Yosef assisting on the goal. The 49ers tied the contest just two minutes later at 1-1. The teams continued through a physical match before Yosef put the finish on the golden goal in the 97th minute after a great pass from sophomore Gabriel Alves.
 
Yosef was named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week after his game-winner and two-assist night at Charlotte. Dias and Dolabella were also honored as Senior CLASS Award finalists this week, the first members of the Herd men's soccer program to be named to the final 10.
 
Marshall's shutout streak came to an end with the first half goal by the 49ers. However, the 2021 Herd set program records with seven-straight clean sheets and 760 minutes and 37 seconds without conceding a goal.
 
The offense has netted 30 goals this season with 12 different players scoring at least one goal and five with two or more. Dolabella leads the team with eight goals and 21 points. Dias and Fernandes are next with five goals each. Yosef has three and freshman Paulo Lino has netted two scores. Fernandes is tops with eight assists. Dolabella, Dias and Yosef are tied for second in assists with five.
 
The Herd has outshot the competition 181-116 and 86-53 on goal.
 
Semmle has allowed just 11 goals this season with a 0.80 goals against average. He has made 38 saves, sports a .776 save percentage to go along with seven clean sheets out of his nine wins.
 
Marshall's defense has allowed the seventh fewest goals in 2021.
 
Following the match against South Carolina, Marshall hits the road for the regular season finale at No. 17 FIU on Saturday Nov. 5. The Herd has already secured a spot in the C-USA Tournament set for Nov. 11-14 in Charlotte.
 
The Opponent
South Carolina is coming off a scoreless draw at Kentucky on Oct. 23. After scoring seven goals over three matches (Oct. 3-12), the Gamecocks have managed just one goal through its last two contests with the lone score coming in a 4-1 loss to FIU.
 
South Carolina has scored 17 goals, but have allowed 25. Logan Frost leads the team with four goals, 11 points, and is tied for the lead in assists with three. Frost was named C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 12 after scoring both goals in the Gamecocks' 2-0 win at UAB. Peter Clement is next in scoring with three goals, three assists and nine points. Jordan Matthews and Brian Banahan have two goals each. South Carolina has been outshot 188-157 and 78-65 on target.
 
In net, Tristen Himes began the season in goal starting six matches. He allowed 13 goals, has a 2.15 goals against average and a 2-4 record. Ryan Bilichuk has started the last eight matches and has allowed 12 goals, a 1.41 goals against average, made 30 saves, has a .714 save percentage and a 3-3-2 record with two clean sheets.
 
Tony Annan is in his first season at the helm and is just the second head coach in the program's history. Mark Berson, who had coached for 43 seasons from 1978 to 2020, stepped down after last year.
 
Following the match against the Herd, South Carolina heads back home for the regular season finale against Old Dominion on Nov. 5.
