Thundering Herd running back honored
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall running back Rasheen Ali has been picked for the Maxwell Football Club's fourth annual Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Watch List.
The list incorporates a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast.
Ten semifinalists will be announced December 2, 2021, while three finalists will be unveiled December 21, 2021. The winner of the 2021 Shaun Alexander Award will be announced on Monday, January 10, 2022. The formal presentations of these awards will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 11, 2022.
Of the 37 individuals to make the list, just six Group of Five players were selected and Ali was the only one from Conference USA.
Ali continued his ascent in Marshall's career records with a pair of first half rushing touchdowns in the Thundering Herd's 28-13 victory at Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Ali now has 17 career rushing touchdowns, passing Ron Darby's 16 in 1987 and '88, while equaling Doug Chapman's 17 in 1998 and Devon Johnson's 17 in 2014. Ali also now has the third-most rushing yards (898) by a freshman in school history, passing Tyler King's 820 rushing yards in 2017.
Ali's 19 total touchdowns are now tied for ninth on Marshall's all-time list, with Chris Parker, who scored that many in 1995, and Johnson, who did so in 2014. Individually, Ali leads the nation with his 19 touchdowns, 17 rushing touchdowns and his 12.7 points per game.
The Thundering Herd (6-3, 4-1) hosts UAB (6-3, 4-1) Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. inside Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
