Maier, Scott join Thundering Herd
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Women's Basketball head coach Tony Kemper announced a pair of signees on Wednesday as Meredith Maier and Sydni Scott are headed to Huntington.
As a junior, the 6'0" Maier averaged 18.5 points, 12.9 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 4.7 steals for Fairmont Senior High School. A native of Grafton, West Virginia, she secured first team all-state and all-conference honor. She was also named to the all-tourney team at the state tournament, where she led the Polar Bears to a runner-up finish.
The 5'8" Scott, rated a four-star prospect by ESPN.com, hails from Prospect Park, Pennsylvania. She was named first team all-Philadelphia Catholic League and Daily Times All-Delco three times and was a 2021 PIAA 5A first team all-state pick. She led Cardinal O'Hara High School to the state title last season, averaging 14 points, five rebounds and five assists per contest.
"Both of these signees have the ability to instantly impact us at the collegiate level," said Kemper. "Sydni is a hard-nosed shooter with a basketball IQ that will help her acclimate quickly to Division I basketball. I like her upbringing as one of the best guards in what is always one of the toughest high school basketball leagues in the country … the Philly Catholic League.
"Meredith adds outside scoring ability to our interior group. She is active and physical in the paint but is also a tremendous perimeter shooter. It is exciting to add such a talented West Virginia player to our program."
The Thundering Herd got off to a flying start in 2021-22 with a 108-45 victory over Bluefield State Tuesday evening. Marshall is back in action Sunday at Radford for a 2 p.m. ET tip.
