Lockette Named to Broyles Award Watch List

Thundering Herd run game coordinator/running backs coach honored

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Marshall run game coordinator/running back coach Telly Lockette has been tabbed a nominee for the 2021 Broyles Award, an honor given annually to the nation's top assistant coach.
 
The 59 nominees in this year's class were selected from approximately 1,270 assistant coaches representing 127 Division I programs across the country. The Broyles Award selection process includes the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), broadcasters, a college football hall-of-fame selection committee and current college head coaches.
 
A 43-member selection committee of distinguished former head coaches, broadcasters, and a committee representing the FWAA will select 15 semi-finalists and five finalists from the list of nominees and an overall winner.
 
The winner of the 2020 award was Steve Sarkisian, Offensive Coordinator at Alabama. Previous winners are not eligible to be nominated for the Broyles Award until the completion of three seasons. 
 
This season, Lockette has mentored running back Rasheen Ali, who has, not only, amassed 939 rushing yards on 5.1 per carry, but also leads the nation in touchdowns (19), rushing touchdowns (17) and points per game (11.4).
 
As a team, the Thundering Herd is sixth nationally with 29 rushing touchdowns.
 
Marshall (6-4 overall, 4-2 Conference USA) is back in action Saturday at Charlotte (5-5, 3-3) for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff in the Queen City. The game will be carried on Stadium with Josh Appel and Patrick Russell on the call.
