Women’s Basketball Returns to the Cam to Face Battlers

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team is back in the Cam Henderson Center for one final home non-conference game against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers. Tipoff is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
It will be the Herd's Christmas game and fans are encouraged to wear ugly Christmas sweaters.
The Thundering Herd enters the game 3-4 overall. The Battlers are 5-4.

The Herd is coming off a loss at St. Bonaventure, 50-47, on Sunday as Marshall is the midst of a four-game skid. Sophomore Savannah Wheeler (18) and graduate student Kennedi Colclough (11) were the lone Herd players scoring in double-figures against the Bonnies. Freshman Aarionna Redman had a career-day in minutes played (21), rebounds (nine) and points (eight). Junior Lorelei Roper led the team with 10 rebounds even returning for the second half after going down in the second quarter with an injury. It was Roper's first double-digit rebound game of the season.
Wheeler continues to lead Marshall in scoring with 17.9 per game. She recorded her 850th career point at St. Bonaventure. She needs 149 points to become the 23rd member of the Marshall 1,000-Point Club. Wheeler ranks 37th in the NCAA and leads Conference USA in free throw percentage at 88.6. She has hit 85.1-percent for her career, tops in program history, and she ranks ninth all-time at Marshall in made free throws with 268. Wheeler is also 15th all-time in made three-pointers in a career with 95. She needs just three more to surpass Stephanie Wine (1992-96) and former teammate Taylor Pearson (2017-21) to move into 13th place.
Colclough has scored in double-figures in six out of Marshall's seven games this season and is averaging 15.7 points per game. Colclough has also been clutch at the free throw line, hitting on 87.1-percent of her attempts good for 48th in the country and second in C-USA. She is shooting 50.0-percent from the field which ranks her 88th in the nation and fifth in the league.
Roper is now averaging 6.4 rebounds per game to lead the Herd. She also extended her blocks streak to six-straight games after tallying one in the third quarter at St. Bonaventure.
Senior Aaliyah Dunham is tied for 19th in the NCAA, and leads Conference USA, in steals per game at 3.00. She has 21 total thefts with five or more in three games. Dunham also leads Marshall in assists with 31 helpers, 4.4 per game.
Following the game against Alderson Broaddus, Marshall travels west for the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic that will be played in South Point Arena, Dec. 20-21. The Herd is set to play versus the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Dec. 20 at 5:30 p.m. eastern (2:30 p.m. local time), and then the Akron Zips on Dec. 21 at 5:30 p.m. eastern (2:30 p.m. local time). Marshall will then get a break over the holiday before getting into C-USA play on Jan. 30 against Louisiana Tech.
The Opponent
Alderson Broaddus comes in with a 5-4 record and have had some high scoring games. The Battlers are averaging over 82 points a game and have hit triple-digits twice. However, Alderson Broaddus is giving up 92 points a game and allowed opponents to hit the century mark three times. The Battlers are coming off one its lowest scoring affairs, for either side, in a 64-59 victory at Davis & Elkins on Saturday.
Five players are currently averaging double-digit scoring per game in Iyahnna Williams (15.2), Taylor Isaac (13.2), Hannah Taylor (11.1), Nyshae' Weaver (10.2) and Ariyah Douglas (10.1). Williams had a season-high 36 points in the 121-110 loss at Salem in the season-opener. She is shooting 54.1-percent from the floor and pulling down 5.3 boards per game. Williams has only attempted two three-pointers this season.
Weaver leads the team on the glass averaging 7.2 rebounds per game. She has had a season-best of 13 boards twice and scored 25 points in a 102-65 win over West Virginia Wesleyan. Douglas is the leader in assists with 4.7 helpers per game.
As a team the Battlers are shooting 45.7-percent from the floor. Despite its high scoring numbers, Alderson Broaddus has done most of its damage inside the three-point line. The Battlers are hitting 28.2 percent from the beyond the arc and averaging just under six made three-pointers per game. Alderson Broaddus has totaled 344 points in the paint, an average of 38.2 per game. The defense has given up 416 points in the paint, 46.2 per game, with a high of 74 to Glenville State in a 133-65 loss.
The Battlers have also struggled with turnovers this season, averaging 27 per game while forcing just 14.9 per game (minus-12.1 difference).
Head coach Summer Quesenberry is in her second season at the helm. Alderson Broaddus was 7-11 in the shortened 2020-21 season, and she is now 12-15 overall with the Battlers.
Following the game against the Herd, Alderson Broaddus gets a break before taking on St. Augustine's University in Raleigh, N.C. on Dec. 31.
