Marshall Athletics Continues Upward Trend in Graduation Success Rate

Seven programs achieve perfect number
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall student-athletes who enrolled between 2011 and 2014 boasted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 90 percent, one point higher than the Herd's numbers last year, according to figures released Thursday by the NCAA.
Seven of the Herd's programs had 100 percent rates, the third consecutive year the department has seen at least six of its teams achieve that standard. Men's cross country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's golf, women's soccer, swimming and diving and volleyball all reached perfect marks.
Swimming and diving has achieved a 100 14 times and was the only Conference USA program to record a perfect figure in this year's numbers.
This is the eighth consecutive year that the department has either maintained or improved upon the previous year's number. Last year, Marshall recorded an 89 percent GSR (for those entering between 2010 and 2013).
"Our outstanding performance in Graduation Success Rate is a testament to the hard work by our student-athletes, coaches and the staff in our Buck Harless Student-Athlete Program," said Marshall Interim AD Jeff O'Malley. "All of them play a tremendous role in what will always be one of our highest priorities, graduating our student-athletes."
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success.
