HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team clamped down on defense in a 62-44 win over the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center. Senior Brianah Ferby recorded her 900th career point in the win.

The Thundering Herd improved to 6-4 and begin Conference USA play 1-0, while the Lady Techsters dropped to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in league action. The 44 points tied Louisiana Tech's lowest output of the season, matching a 62-44 loss at Ole Miss back on Nov. 19.

"It's great to start (C-USA play) with a win," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "I thought our team played hard. We got done what we tried to get done, especially on the defensive end. (Louisiana Tech) didn't quite play how we thought they would on offense, so we had to scrap what we were going to do and adjust a little bit. I thought that affected our slow start, but we really moved the ball well after that.

"Rebounding was tough in there. They definitely had a size advantage on us, but I thought we were super-physical and scrappy with what we do have and it's great to polish it off."

Louisiana Tech came into the game averaging just over 40 rebounds per game. Marshall held the Lady Techsters to just 25 boards total, its lowest of the season, and only 11 in the second half. The Herd dominated in points off of turnovers, 20-2, and also outscored the Lady Techsters 16-6 on second chance points. Marshall finished the game with 12 steals as six players recorded at least one theft. Louisiana Tech came into the game averaging 10.3 steals per game and only tallied five.

Ferby finished the night with 12 points and was 2-of-5 from beyond the arc including a shot from about 30 feet away late in the fourth quarter as the shot clock was winding down. She tallied her 900th career point on a free throw at the 7:11 mark in the third quarter. Ferby tallied 819 points during her career at Austin Peay, and has put up 84 so far with the Green & White. She has reached double-figures five times this season and in 42 games in her career.

Sophomore Savannah Wheeler led all Marshall scorers with 16 and pushed her career total to 923 points. The reigning Conference USA Player of the Week has reached double-digits in 13-straight games and in 49 of her 59 career games. She added six rebounds three assists and led the Herd with four steals. Wheeler has tallied four steals in back-to-back contests.

Graduate student Kennedi Colclough scored 13 points and is now over 800 in her career (804). She has scored 10 or more points in eight games this season and 42 times in her career. Colclough scored 521 during her time at Stetson and now has 283 in her Marshall career. The 6-0 forward added six boards, one assist and one steal.

Junior Lorelei Roper starred on the glass again for the Herd leading all players with nine, including five offensive rebounds. Roper has pulled down at least seven rebounds in five-straight games. She also continued her shot-blocking streak to nine-straight after recording two on Thursday. Senior Aaliyah Dunham finished with nine points and led the Herd with four assists. She added two steals as well.

Junior Kia Sivils made her return to the lineup after missing the last two games with an injury. Sivils grabbed four boards, three offensive, to go along with one steal and one block. Freshman CC Mays had an excellent defensive game and finished with five boards and one steal to go along with seven points. Freshman Aarionna Redman buried a three in the second quarter and also had one assist. Sophomore Alexis Johnson finished with four boards and tied her career-high with three steals.

Marshall got off to a slow start on the offensive end. The Lady Techsters took the lead at the 6:55 mark and held it through the rest of the quarter, leading by as much as seven. Mays drilled a three after a great pass from Redman to cut the deficit to four, 14-10, with 2:03 to go in the period. Louisiana Tech scored the final two points of the first and also held the Herd off the scoreboard over the last two minutes, leading 16-10. The Lady Techsters shot 50-percent (6-of-12) in the first.

The Herd took over in the second quarter beginning the period on a 9-0 run over the first three minutes to take a three-point lead, 19-16. Ferby scored five of Marshall's points during the run with a three-pointer coming from the corner at the 7-minute mark. Thirty seconds later, Louisiana Tech finally scored to break the run, but could not take the momentum away from the Herd. Marshall outscored the Lady Techsters 22-8 in the second and went in at the half leading 32-24. The Herd shot 50-percent (8-of-16) from the floor including 4-of-6 from three. After being held to just one point in the first, Wheeler scored 10 on 4-of-6 shooting and 2-of-3 from three. Roper had both of her blocks in the second quarter.

Marshall was outrebounded 9-5 in the first quarter and then flipped those numbers in the second including four offensive boards that led to five second chance points. The Herd also scored 15 points off of six Lady Techster turnovers in the second.

Marshall struggled to score in the third quarter with just 12 points, however the Herd's defense continued to be stingy allowing just seven points to Louisiana Tech. Marshall continued to force the Lady Techsters to use up a lot of clock time before finally taking a shot, hitting just 3-of-12 in the third, also nabbed five turnovers, and led 44-31 heading into the fourth.

Louisiana Tech managed to drop the Herd's lead to eight, 46-38, with 7:58 remaining. However, Marshall went on a 5-0 run over the next 1:56 leading to a Lady Techster timeout. Wheeler hit a three and then Mays took off down the floor after a defensive rebound and sank a jumper in the paint to put the lead back to 13. Marshall maintained a double-digit lead throughout the rest of the game. The defense kept Louisiana Tech off balance. Marshall won the rebounding battle 13-4 in the fourth quarter. Roper pulled down six with four on the offensive side, and Mays grabbed four. Dunham drew five fouls in the final period and was 6-of-8 from the line.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center court on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Southern Miss who lost 98-88 at WKU Thursday night. Louisiana Tech travels to Bowling Green, Ky., to take on WKU on Saturday.
