Coles wins gold in 50 free, team tied for 3rd place
ATLANTA, Ga. — The Marshall University women's swimming and diving team completed day one of the 2021 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday.
The Herd is currently tied for third place overall with Florida Atlantic University, sitting at 133 points, respectively.
Senior swimmer Darby Coles won the gold medal for the Herd in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.97.
Coles, junior Regan Raines, and freshmen Claire Kenney and Klava Katayama placed third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:32.40.
To cap off the first day of competition, Coles, Katayama, and freshmen Paige Banton and Madeline Hart finished third overall in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:45.36.
Marshall Swimming and Diving is back in action tomorrow, Feb. 26, beginning with trials at 10:30 a.m., and will conclude day two after the 6 p.m. finals session. There are no spectators allowed, but the live stream, heat sheets, and results can be found here.
Marshall Head Coach Ian Walsh:
"The staff was really pleased with how day one went and the performances we had. So many positive things from top to bottom in each event."
"Darby (Coles) winning the conference title in the 50 Freestyle was really special, being our only senior and the leadership she's provided for this young team. Both of our relays made it on the podium, which showcased our depth through those events and notched All Time Top 10 performances in each."
"Paige (Banton) and Eszter (Laban) now sit 6th and 10th All Time in the 200 IM, respectively. Klava (Katayama) and Regan's (Raines) 50 Free is currently 8th and 10th All Time, respectively. Alaina Laster now sits 10th All Time in 3m with her consolation heat performance."
"We had three medal performances and 12 lifetime best performances along with over 20-plus season bests. Each person made a few race adjustments this evening and we saw a ton of positive changes."
"We look forward to tomorrow morning and hope to build our momentum through day two."
