DENTON, Tx. – Jazion Jackson secured a crucial offensive rebound and converted two game-winning free throws with eight-tenths of a second left to help host North Texas hold off Marshall 52-51 Friday evening in the SuperPit in Denton.
The Mean Green improved to 12-4 overall and 9-2 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd dropped to 6-9 and 5-8. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Herd in Denton.
Jackson finished 6-for-6 from the free throw line en route to 11 points and four assists, one behind the tandem of Quincy Noble and Rochelle Lee, who had 12 points apiece. Noble also registered 10 rebounds in a double-double effort, but Madi Townley posted a game-high 12 boards. N'Yah Boyd had a rough game offensively (2-for-15 shooting, 0-for-6 from the 3-point line), but hounded the Thundering Herd all night with five steals.
Marshall's Savannah Wheeler had 16 points to lead all scorers and Kristen Mayo's three triples lifted her to 10 points. Lorelei Roper had 10 rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.
Mayo's trifecta of 3-pointers gave her 137 for her career and put her in sole possession of third on Marshall's all-time list. Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (146, 1994-98) is second, while Shayna Gore (303, 2015-19) in the Thundering Herd's all-time leader.
Marshall struggled with turnovers all night, finishing with a season-high 23.
Even with that, Marshall still found itself in a single-digit game most of the way and finally took its first lead (51-50) on a Lorelei Roper layup with 17.6 seconds left. After a Mean Green timeout, North Texas had to settle for a contested Boyd 19-footer from near the top of the key. The shot was no good, but that's when Jackson swooped in for her late-game heroics.
The Thundering Herd did have a chance to respond, but Paige Shy and Kennedi Colclough were unable to connect on a lob pass as time expired.
Marshall won the overall rebounding battle (41-38), but the Mean Green's 10 offensive rebounds in the second half proved to be significant. North Texas held a 13-6 edge in steals.
"Obviously, that's a tough way to lose a game," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "We didn't play relatively well most of the game, but you do have to credit North Texas. I thought they did a good job of pressuring us in the first half. We didn't handle that very well. We were very disoriented in the first half, but were better in the second."
"Twenty-three turnovers is absolutely ridiculous. You can't win a game on the road and turn it over 23 times. I was proud of the fact that we found a way to get a lead at the end, considering that we were in a bad way for a lot of the game. And then we just gave up a rebound. We guarded whatever they ran pretty well (on the final NT possession), had some switches and things like that. We got out on a 19-foot shot and we were kind've ok with that. We were 0.8 seconds away from winning and couldn't get it done. That's frustrating and we'll have to regroup and come back tomorrow."
The teams will play the final game of the series Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. ET/3:30 CT in a game that will be carried on CUSA.tv.
