Team reaches podium third day in a row

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Marshall University Women's Swimming and Diving team finished fifth overall at the 2021 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday evening.

The Herd finished with a total of 440 points.

Freshman Paige Banton gave the Herd its second gold medal of the meet as she won the 200-yard breaststroke with a final time of 2:12.95, which ranks first among all-time Marshall Swimming and Diving, surpassing Nele Albers time of 2:15.83 in 2015. Freshman Naomee Miller finished fifth overall with a time of 2:18.14.

Senior Darby Coles finished second in the 100-yard freestyle finals with a time of 49.79, collecting her second solo medal of the meet.

In the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of freshmen Klava Katayama, Madeline Hart, junior Regan Raines, and Coles finished fourth overall with a final time of 3:25.14.

Marshall Head Coach Ian Walsh:

"We always saw how this final session is one of our strongest, and this group made a statement tonight. Darby Coles medaled (silver) once again in her final individual race of her career. Our second conference champion, Paige Banton, broke our school record and led from start to finish."

"So many people played a part in getting us to this point to compete here as a team. Our administration's support was endless and kept our team safe during this season. Our athletic trainers and academic staff gave our women the support they needed while navigating these unprecedented times. And lastly, I'm so grateful for Megan and Hannah for helping create this environment so our women could flourish this weekend."

"We're incredibly proud of this team and I know we learned a great deal about ourselves individually this year that will allow us to take that next step as a program."
