HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Victoria Morris scored 15 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter to power the Old Dominion women's basketball team to an 80-70 victory over Marshall Friday evening at the Cam Henderson Center.
The win moved the Monarchs to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in Conference USA, while the Thundering Herd dipped to 4-7 and 3-6.
ODU dressed just eight players, which did not include Amari Young (15.1 points, 9.3 rebounds) and Ajah Wayne (14.0 points, 9.3 rebounds).
Marshall was without starting shooting guard Kristen Mayo (9.5 points) and top reserve Kia Sivils (23.0 minutes per game).
Morris made four of her final five shots in the period, to go with a 5-for-5 effort at the free throw line. Maggie Robinson also finished with 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting, while Aziah Hudson added 13 (4-for-4 FGs, 3-for-3 on 3-pointers) and Lanay Wheaton supplied 11. Mariah Adams added a game-high seven assists and Dejah Carter recorded six rebounds.
Marshall's Savannah Wheeler and Alexis Johnson posted 18 points apiece, and Lorelei Roper turned in another nice performance with 12 (tying a career-high) and Kennedi Colclough added 10. Taylor Pearson equaled a career-best in assists with five and Roper tied a career-high with four blocks. Johnson contributed a game-high eight rebounds as well to complement her career-high scoring total.
The two teams battled to a 20-20 deadlock through one quarter, but the Monarchs grabbed a 13-point lead (41-28) on a Hudson triple with 2:05 left in the second period. Johnson and Colclough answered with baskets for the Thundering Herd for the halftime margin of nine (41-32).
Marshall rallied in the third quarter and took its first lead at 51-50 on a Johnson layup at 2:18 mark. However, ODU got the last five points of the quarter to take a four-point advantage (55-51) heading into the final 10 minutes.
The two teams traded blows down the stretch before Roper scored inside to knot the affair for the final time at 66-all with 4:57 left. But that's when Morris went to work. She answered with a 3-pointer and fired in four-point play at the 1:13 mark to give the Monarchs a seven-point edge (75-68) to put the contest out of reach.
Marshall held a big advantage on points in the paint (46-22), but ODU, who made just eight turnovers, turning 13 Herd miscues into 15 points.
"We're disappointed in not being able to find a way to win on our home floor," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "You have to give them credit. Victoria Morris, that shot she hit at the top (of the key), that was a great shot and we can't foul her too. But, that was a really big play. We kind of still had a chance until that went in. We didn't play good enough defense over the course of that game to get a win at home. We gave up 41 in the first half. We are missing people but so are they. I thought our interior play was pretty good, our interior players stepped up. We have to get more out of our guards tomorrow. That is just the bottom line."
The two teams play the final game of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. That game will be carried on ESPN+ with Jake Griffith on the call.
