AKRON, Ohio – The Marshall men's soccer team hits the road for the first time in the 2021 spring season with a non-conference match against the Akron Zips. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
 
The Thundering Herd enters the match 3-0-1 overall. The Zips come in at 0-0-1.

The Thundering Herd earned its third-straight victory with its third-consecutive shutout, 1-0, over Bowling Green. The lone goal for Marshall came in the 74th minute as junior Jan-Erik Leinhos converted a penalty kick. Marshall outshot the Falcons 14-2, and neither of Bowling Green's shots were on goal. Herd junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle has gone just over 127 minutes of game action without facing a shot on goal.
 
So far this season, Marshall has outscored its opponents 14-2. The Herd has also outshot the opposition 87-10 and 42-4 in shots on goal. Leinhos and junior Vitor Dias lead the team with three goals and two assists each. Senior Jamil Roberts also has two assists and one goal. Redshirt sophomore Milo Yosef has two goals and five more players have all scored a goal for the Herd.
 
Semmle has played 335 minutes in the net this season, allowing just one goal and has two saves. He sports a goals against average of 0.27 and a .667 save percentage. Semmle leads the team in minutes played with junior defender Nathan Dossantos and Dias right behind at 331 minutes.
 
The Opponent
The Akron Zips played two exhibition matches against Villanova and Dayton before beginning the regular season. The season-opener at Pittsburgh was postponed and the Zips finally got out on the pitch on Feb. 25 against Kentucky. The teams played to a 1-1 draw. Diogo Pacheco scored for Akron in the 15th minute. The Wildcats tied the match in the 70th minute.
 
Will Meyer played all 110 minutes in goal for the Zips and finished with two saves along with the one goal allowed. Meyer, a senior, transferred from Louisville after spending three seasons with the Cardinals and appearing in 15 career matches.
 
Akron is looking to replace its top scorer from the 2019 season in David Egbo (seven goals, four assists). Sophomore Will Jackson is the leading returning scorer after tallying four goals and three assists as a freshman.
