FRISCO, Tx. – Louisiana Tech, the West Division's fourth seed, scored five points in the final 59 seconds to slip past Marshall 50-48 in the first round of the 2021 Conference USA Women's Basketball Tournament at The Star in Frisco.
The Thundering Herd (8-11) entered as the East's fourth seed, following a 7-9 conference finish.
The Lady Techsters improved to 14-9 overall and will face Middle Tennessee, the East's top seed, at 3 p.m. ET/2 CT Thursday in the quarterfinals.
Tech was led by a sterling performance from Anna Larr Roberson, who became the first opposing player to crack the 20-point mark against the Thundering Herd in the last seven games. She finished with 22 points on 7-for-11 shooting to go with 14 rebounds. She was also 8-for-9 from the free throw line. Keiunna Walker added 16, but they came on 21 shots (7-for-21), while Amber Dixon contributed 12 (5-for-8 shooting). Raizel Guinto shook off an 0-for-8 clip from the field to post four assists and three steals.
Marshall got 17 points from Savannah Wheeler and Kennedi Colclough posted her second double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Kia Sivils had four assists and Wheeler and CC Mays chipped in three steals apiece.
The Thundering Herd had an impressive first quarter, building a 20-14 lead by burying four triples in the first 10 minutes. The lead grew to 10 (24-14) on a driving layup by Taylor Pearson at the four-minute mark of the second period, but the Lady Techsters ran off the quarter's last seven points to pull to within three (24-21) at the half.
Tech outscored Marshall 17-8 in the third period and held a 38-32 lead at the end of it.
The Thundering Herd came to life in the fourth, however, as Colclough scored the first five points and Pearson added a layup to give MU a 39-38 lead at the 7:35 mark.
The game seesawed from there and it looked as though Marshall would take control after Pearson hit a layup with 59 seconds left to give the Herd a 48-45 lead. However, Roberson scored on the ensuing possession to cut the advantage to one and Marshall then called timeout with 31 seconds left.
Tech then forced a Thundering Herd turnover out of the timeout and Walker converted an acrobatic runner, with a Marshall foul, to the put the Techsters back in front by one (49-48) with five ticks left.
Walker missed the free throw, but Roberson grabbed the rebound and Tech retained possession. Marshall then put Roberson at the free throw line, where she made one of two with 2.5 seconds left to put the Techsters up by two (50-48).
Marshall then called timeout and advanced the ball.
The Thundering Herd's bid to go to overtime went by the boards when Pearson's runner from just left of the key bounded away and the Lady Techsters escaped with the victory.
Neither team shot especially well from deep, but Tech really struggled (1-for-16). The Herd went 6-for-21.
The Lady Techsters made up for it at the free throw line however, going 11-for-14, to Marshall's 4-for-7. The Herd was called for 17 fouls to Tech's eight.
"Obviously, that's a tough way to go out," said Marshall head coach Tony Kemper. "I thought this group learned how to be tough and we were tough until the end."
"If you give up 50, you have to think you're going to win. That's a credit to (Louisiana Tech). They're a great defensive team. But I also know that we played well enough on that end of the floor to win the game and we have to come up with a little better offense at some point. That's probably the story. I thought we hung in there when they got us in a bad way. Obviously, they made one big play that we didn't."
Tech held advantages on points in the paint (28-20), points off turnovers (14-10) and fast break points (9-4), while Marshall won bench points (12-0) and second chance points (9-8).
