HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's soccer (6-2-2, 3-0-1 C-USA) team played the Old Dominion Monarchs (1-1-3, 0-1-3 C-USA) to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, W.Va. The Herd outshot the Monarchs 21-5, including 10-1 in shots on goal.
It didn't take the Green and White long to strike. Max Schenider lobbed a through ball to Jamil Roberts on the left side and Roberts dished it to Vinicius Fernandes who put it past ODU keeper Djubril Doumbia in the fourth minute to put the Herd up 1-0.
Roberts then fired a shot on target nine minutes later, but Doumbia stopped the attempt.
In the 26th minute, the Herd gave the ball away in its defensive half and ODU's Ruben Pedersen dribbled it in and put it past Marshall goalkeeper Oliver Semmle to tie the contest. Pedro Dolabella tried to answer for the Herd in the 30th minute, but Doumbia was there to save the attempt as the score was tied 1-1.
Dolabella and Schneider got out firing to begin the second half, however, Doumbia was there to save both shots in the 49th and 65th minutes, respectively.
MU's Joao Souza fired shots on target in the 75th and 80th minutes, but Doumbia prevented both to keep the score tied. Jan-Erik Leinhos put an attempt on target one minute later as it was saved and Jacob Adams followed with a shot in the 85th minute, but hit the crossbar.
ODU's Derek Neidlinger was issued a red card in the 87th minute for a foul on Roberts as the Monarchs played with 10 student-athletes the rest of the way.
After a Dolabella header went, the teams went to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Milo Yosef and Souza each put attempts at Doumbia, but both shots were saved and the teams ended to a second extra period.
In the second overtime, there were no shots as the two sides played to a draw.
