HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 13th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is back on the pitch Saturday in Conference USA action as the Florida Atlantic Owls make the trip north. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field is set for 11 a.m.
The Thundering Herd enters the match at 6-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in C-USA play. The Owls come in at 5-2-2 overall and 2-2-0 in conference.

Marshall has struggled in recent contests being able to get a strike into the back of the net, despite outshooting its last two opponents 33-9 and 16-4 on goal, falling 1-0 at WVU and then playing to a 1-1 draw with Old Dominion on Saturday. Marshall was No. 8 in the rankings before the two matches. The Herd fell back to No. 13 this week, still the highest ranked team in Conference USA, as well as leading in points in the standings with 10. The Charlotte 49ers are 17th and the Kentucky Wildcats fell out of the top 25, but are still receiving votes.
Marshall has kept up the pressure this season, even as goals have not been coming in bunches, forcing defenses and keepers to be on constant alert. In the 2021 spring, the Herd has fired a total of 180 shots to just 52 from the opposition, as well as 64 on goal with 23 from the competition. Junior Vitor Dias still leads the team, and the conference, in scoring with six goals and 15 points. Fellow classmates Jan-Erik Leinhos and Vinicius Fernandes are both second in goals scored with three each. Fernandes hit his third of the year against Old Dominion.
Seniors Jamil Roberts and Pedro Dolabella along with Leinhos and Dias are all tied for the team lead in assists with three. Roberts assisted on the goal by Fernandes against Old Dominion and it put Roberts in a tie for second all-time in program history with 18 career helpers. He is tied with Ryan LaPointe (1989-93).
Junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle leads the league with five shutouts, and has a 5-2-2 record. In 905 minutes of action this year, Semmle has allowed five goals, sports a 0.50 goals against average, has 11 saves and a .688 save percentage. He ranks 22nd in the NCAA in goals against average.
The Opponent
The Owls began the year 3-0-2 before dropping its first two conference matches to FIU (2-0) and then No. 10 Kentucky (3-1). Following the two losses Florida Atlantic has posted back-to-back wins over Old Dominion (1-0) and South Carolina (2-1). Over the last two matches, FAU has won the shots battle 26-20 and 12-8 on goal. Overall this season, Florida Atlantic has outshot its competition 93-67 and 46-34 on goal. The Owls have outscored its opponents 12-8.
Ivan Mykhaikenko, the reigning Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week, leads his team with four goals, eight points and 20 shots. Alonso Coello and Blake Dean are next with two goals each. Six different players have notched one assist each.
Junior goalkeeper Neil Strauber has played all 850 minutes in net in his first season with the Owls. He has allowed eight goals, has a 0.85 goals against average, made 26 saves and carries a .765 save percentage. Strauber has delivered four shutouts as well.
Following the match at Marshall, Florida Atlantic finishes the regular season at No. 17 Charlotte on April 10, and then back at home against UAB on April 17.
