Grayson, Kentucky native honored
DALLAS – Marshall's Kristen Mayo was selected to the 2020-21 Conference USA Women's Basketball All-Academic Team, the league office announced Friday.
Mayo, the Thundering Herd's second-leading scorer this season at 10.3 points per game, boasts a 3.8 GPA in Elementary Education. She has been a member of the Commissioner's Honor Roll and recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal.
"Kristen embodies exactly what we want in a Marshall women's basketball player," said head coach Tony Kemper. "She is a tremendous competitor on the basketball floor and an even better student and teammate off it. This award is well-deserved and a perfect cap to Kristen's Marshall career."
The Grayson, Kentucky native is Marshall's first women's basketball student-athlete to make the league's All-Academic team since Kendra King did it following the 2006-07 campaign.
On Thursday, Mayo announced through social media that she will not be able to return from an injury she suffered in the waning stages of Saturday's 56-55 win over North Texas. The 5'5" guard stated on Instagram: "Every ending is a new beginning and I'm walking away with no regrets and only gratitude from the best ride I've ever been on with the sport that's led the way. Go Herd."
Mayo participated in 101 career games, with 96 of those coming in the starting lineup. She finished with 870 career points and holds the single-game school record for most 3-pointers in a game without a miss, going 6-for-6 against Coppin State in December of 2018. She is third on the school's all-time triples list with 138 and her 90.2 free throw percentage in 2018-19 stands third all-time in Marshall's single-season records.
