Men’s Basketball Closes Out Regular Season with Win on Senior Day over Charlotte

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Marshall University men's basketball team (15-6, 9-5 C-USA) defeated the Charlotte 49ers (9-15, 5-11 C-USA) by a final score of 75-66 on Saturday afternoon in the Cam Henderson Center on Senior Day. Marshall honored Mikel Beyers, Darius George, Luke Thomas, Jarrod West and Jannson Williams during the pre-game festivities.
 
"We pride ourselves that we play hard, we're competitive, and we're gonna do it every day," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the game.
 
Junior Taevion Kinsey led the Herd with 23 points and eight rebounds. The guard made eight of his 19 attempts from field and drained all six of his free-throw attempts.
 
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor finished with a season-high 21 points, four assists, and three steals. Taylor went 8-for-14 from field, making 3-of-6 from behind the arc.
 
Redshirt senior Jannson Williams followed his teammates up with 11 points and six rebounds in the victory.
 
The Herd started out on a 13-0 run to begin the game with two-three-pointers from Jarrod West, a layup from Williams, a three-pointer from Taylor and Kinsey capped it off with a dunk.
 
The 49ers answered with a 16-3 run, bringing the score within one, 19-18, with just under 10 minutes left in the first half.
 
The Herd went on a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 27-20, but Charlotte went on a 7-0 run to tie the game, 27-27, with 4:41 before the half. The two sides traded baskets down the stretch of the opening half as the game was all squared at 34-34 at the break.
 
In the second half, Taylor and Mikel Beyers opened up with back-to-back layups to jump out to a four-point lead, 38-34. However, the Herd broke the game open with a 15-2 run from 14:31 to 8:12 to take a 57-46 advantage over the 49ers.
 
Marshall went into cruise control during the final eight minutes as it held Charlotte at bay and made its final eight field-goal attempts to seal the victory.
 
GAME NOTES
Today marked D'Antoni's 128th win at the helm of the Herd.
 
Kinsey recorded his 11th game of 20 or more points this season.
 
Taylor's 21-point effort marks his third such game this season and the fifth of his career.
 
Beyers tied his season-high in blocks with three.
 
With his back-to-back games of 10 or more points, Williams now has six double-digit scoring efforts this season.
 
The Herd is 20-10 in March under D'Antoni.
 
MU is 9-0 when it rebounds its opponent after beating CLT on the glass 39-35 in the win.
 
Marshall went a perfect 14-for-14 from the free-throw line marking the first time since Jan. 20, 2018, against UAB in which it made all of its free throws with 10 or more attempts.
 
With two steals in the contest, West surpassed UTEP's Randy Culpepper for second-most career steals in C-USA history with 252. West is 12 from tying Charlotte's Eddie Basden for the conference record.
 
UP NEXT
Marshall locked up third place in the east division ahead of the 2021 Conference USA Tournament. The Herd will open the tournament on Wednesday, March 10. Game time and opponent are TBD.
