Back-to-back matches Herd defense does not allow a shot on goal

Box Score (PDF)

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The 12th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team delivered its seventh shutout of the season, 1-0, over the UAB Blazers on Saturday. It was the second consecutive match that the Herd defense did not allow a shot on goal.

The Thundering Herd improved to 8-2-2 overall and stays unbeaten in Conference USA at 5-0-1. The Blazers fall to 3-11-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference.

"It was difficult out there," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "UAB have a great facility they share with a USL team, but with all the rain, the pitch was like a swimming pool in some places. But fair play to both teams, we both battled hard. I thought once we adapted to the pitch in the first half we played some very good football. The goal (by Jamil Roberts) was excellent. A very nice through ball from Nate (Dossantos), and a great little faint from Vitor (Dias) to freeze the defender, and a great finish from Jamil.

"The second half could've been so different. Still we hope the runs and the movement will eventually pay off. It became quite a disjointed match. We can work on that this week. We defended really well again. We dealt with everything so competently. If we can keep that up, we are capable of anything.

"Huge match against Charlotte for the Championship on Sunday to come!"

Marshall outshot UAB 10-6 in the game and 4-0 on goal. The back line of junior Nathan Dossantos, and redshirt junior Collin Mocyunas in the center with junior Jan-Erik Leinhos and sophomore Gabriel Alves on the outside had another outstanding match in limiting opportunities for the Blazers even with the wet conditions.

Senior Jamil Roberts scored his second goal of the season and sixth of his career in the 38th minute. Dossantos fired a long pass downfield that made its way to Robert for the finish. The Herd totaled seven shots in the first half with four on goal. Sophomore Joao Souza had two shots on goal and junior Vinicius Fernandes had one.

The Herd had three shots in the second half with none on goal.

Marshall finishes the regular season on Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m., at home against the 14th-ranked Charlotte 49ers. Charlotte defeated Florida Atlantic, 1-0 on Saturday, and sit at 5-0-0 in conference play. The 49ers still have one more match against the FIU Panthers coming up on Wednesday, April 14, before making the trip to Huntington. The team that finishes the regular season at the top of C-USA will receive the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
