No. 9 Men’s Soccer Clashes with No. 12 Charlotte for C-USA Title

Winner earns conference championship and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 9th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is back home to take on No. 12 Charlotte for the regular season finale, as well as the Conference USA Regular Season Championship. Kickoff from Hoops Family Field is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.
The winner of the match will capture the 2020 C-USA Title and earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Sunday will also be senior day as the Herd will honor Jamil Roberts and Kyle Winquist.
The Thundering Herd enter the match at 8-2-2 overall and 5-0-1 in conference play. The 49ers come in at 6-2-1 overall and 6-0-0 in conference.

The Herd came through with its seventh shutout of the season to defeat the UAB Blazers. Marshall defense also made it back-to-back matches, and the third overall in the season, of not allowing a single shot on goal. Senior Jamil Roberts scored the game-winning goal in the 38th minute off a pass from junior Nathan Dossantos. Dossantos was also named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Before the match against Charlotte, Marshall will honor its two seniors in Roberts and Winquist. Roberts has appeared in 66 matches with 56 starts in his Marshall career, and logged over 5,200 minutes on the pitch. He has scored 16 goals and is second all-time in program history with 19 assists. The speedy forward has 51 total points and has been credited with seven game-winning goals. Roberts has taken one penalty kick, and converted it, in his career and it came against No. 6 Washington in the third round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. The Langport, England native was drafted 77th overall in the MLS Superdraft by Sporting KC.
Winquist has appeared in three matches in the net during his time at Marshall, totaling 227 minutes. He played in two contests with one start back in 2017 as a freshman and recorded four saves. Winquist has one start this season, playing the first half against Ohio Valley and earning the win. The senior goalkeeper has been a star in the classroom and is heading to law school at Villanova.
Junior Vitor Dias remains the team leader in goals (6) and points (15). Roberts leads the way in assists with four. Junior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle with another shutout has lowered his goals against average down to 0.41, good for sixth in the NCAA.
The Opponent
The Charlotte 49ers got off to a little bit of a rough start to the season going 0-2-1, but the team has been on a tear in Conference USA play. Charlotte has won six-straight and is once again set to battle for the C-USA Title. The last five have been by shutout.
Preston Popp leads the team with six goals this season. Six different players have scored at least one goal as the 49ers have outscored the opposition 13-7 this year. Charlotte has outshot its competition 127-72 and 46-32 in shots on goal.
Austin Mullins has been the goalkeeper for Charlotte over the last four matches and has been outstanding. All four contests are shutouts, leaving his goals against average at 0.00. He has tallied 11 saves with a season-high five in the win over FIU on Wednesday.
