HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 5th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team finished Saturday night with a scoreless draw versus No. 10 Kentucky at Hoops Family Field. Marshall senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle tied his season-high with five saves.

The Thundering Herd moves to 4-1-3 overall and 0-0-2 in Conference USA play. The Wildcats are now 5-0-2 overall and 0-0-2 in league play.

"Kentucky did a very good job defensively with five across the back," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "I think Kentucky's job tonight was to set up shop and park the bus and then try and to create some chances off our mistakes. It was a strong performance from us tonight as we maintained the ball most of the game but we just didn't get the shots to show for it.

"Oliver (Semmle) was exceptional. A-plus performance from him tonight. He did a good job coming out and making the saves. He doesn't have to make many saves but obviously some very important ones tonight. But his overall performance, his kicking, his composure, his vision for the game was very very good tonight. Definitely a man-of-the-match performance from him."

It was a very physical match between the two longtime rivals. Thirty-two total fouls were called to go along with four yellow cards, two for each team. The Wildcats outshot the Herd 8-6 and 5-1 on goal.

Marshall won the possession battle 63-percent to 37-percent for the entire contest. The Herd continued to hold on to the ball in an attempt to break down the UK defense. Marshall managed just one shot in the first half with senior Jan-Erik Leinhos firing one that missed wide. The Wildcats had one shot on goal in the first half, coming in the 15th minute that was stopped by Semmle.

The second half was much of the same for Marshall in trying to break down Kentucky's defense. The Wildcats had an opportunity in the 47th minute with back-to-back shots that were both stonewalled by Semmle. The senior keeper recorded his fourth save of the match in the 60th minute to help keep the contest scoreless.

Fifth-year senior Pedro Dolabella sent a shot high from about 25 yards out in the 72nd minute. It was the final shot from either team in the second half.

The physicality kept right on going through the night as tempers began to get heated as the outside temperature cooled. In the 93rd minute, Semmle made his fifth save of the night with All-Conference USA selection Eythor Bjorgolfsson staring him down. Semmle made the stop while just a few yards in front of Bjorgolfsson and knocked the ball out bounds. Kentucky's corner kick was then punched out of range by Semmle.

The Herd got its first shot on goal in the 100th minute as senior Vitor Dias had a header with seven seconds left on the clock that was stopped by Jan Hoffelner, Kentucky's keeper.

Marshall went on the attack in the second overtime and had a great opportunity in the 103rd minute. Senior Ibrahima Diop received a pass in the middle of the 18-yard box and then just missed wide left of the goal. In the 105th minute, redshirt junior Milo Yosef blasted a long-range shot that missed high. Those two chances were the only shots from either team in the second overtime as the match finished with the 0-0 draw.

The Herd has one more home match on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m., against Butler before going out on the road for two contests at Old Dominion (Oct. 3) and Florida Atlantic (Oct. 9).
