No. 5 Men’s Soccer to Host Butler in Midweek Clash

Kickoff set for Wednesday at 5 p.m. from Hoops Family Field
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 5th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is back in action at Hoops Family Field on Wednesday at 5 p.m., against the Butler Bulldogs. It is the Herd's final contest of four-straight home matches before going back on the road.
The Thundering Herd enters the match with an overall record of 4-1-3. The Bulldogs come in at 3-4-1.

Marshall is coming off a tough, physical contest against No. 10 Kentucky on Saturday. The teams played to a scoreless draw. Senior goalkeeper Oliver Semmle tied his season-high with five saves and earned his second clean sheet of the season. Semmle was named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday for his efforts against the Wildcats and the 20th-ranked Akron Zips.
The Herd ranks ninth in the NCAA in scoring offense with 2.50 goals per match and eighth in total goals with 20. Senior Vinicius Fernandes leads the team with five goals which also leads the conference and is 19th in the nation. His 14 total points also leads the league and is 15th in the NCAA. Senior Vitor Dias is second on the team with four goals, but leads with five assists which is good for first in C-USA and eighth in the country.
As a team, the Herd's offense is also 20th in the nation and first in conference in shot accuracy (.500). Marshall has 46 of its 92 total shots on goal. The Herd has outshot the opposition 92-78 and 46-37 on goal.
The defense for Marshall has been picking up steam with the back line of senior Jan-Erik Leinhos and sophomore Gabriel Alves on the outside and seniors Collin Mocyunas and Nathan Dossantos at centerback. After allowing 10 goals in the first six contests, the Herd has blanked its last two opponents, both ranked in the top 25, and the team is now 19th in the NCAA in goal differential (10). Semmle has been the main keeper in the net playing in just under 679 minutes of a possible 780. Semmle has allowed 10 goals, has 24 saves, sports a 1.33 goals against average and a .706 save percentage.
Marshall hits the road for its next two contests at Old Dominion on Sunday, Oct 3, and then at Florida Atlantic on Oct. 9. The Herd's remaining home contests are against UAB (Oct. 16), Wright State (Oct. 19) and senior day versus South Carolina (Oct. 30).
The Opponent
The Bulldogs have a sub-.500 record, but Butler has been a tough opponent this season. Back on Aug. 31, Butler played then No. 1 Indiana and lost 1-0. On Sept. 21, the Bulldogs defeated then No. 18 Lipscomb 3-1 at home. Butler is coming off a tough 1-0 loss at Villanova on Saturday and is now 1-1 in the Big East.
Through eight matches, Butler has only been outscored by one, 7-6. The Bulldogs have outshot the competition 103-82. However, only 29 of those 103 shots have been on goal (.282). Wilmer Cabrera Jr. leads the team in scoring with three goals and has 15 in his career. Jack Streberger, Tommy Visser, and Joel Harvey have one goal each. Streberger and Jack Haywood lead the team with three assists each. Haywood has 19 assists in his career and is tied for seventh all-time at Butler.
In the net it has been Gabriel Gjergji for all 740 minutes. He has allowed seven goals, has 19 saves, sports a 0.85 goals against average and a .731 save percentage. Gjergji has two shutouts this season and 13 in his career good for fifth all-time in program history.
Following the match in Huntington, Butler returns home to Indianapolis for a conference match with Seton Hall. The Bulldogs have eight contests remaining on the schedule with all eight as Big East matchups.
