HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Dave Wilson, who hosts a daily talk show for WAJR and is part of the Thundering Herd Sports Network from Learfield radio team, has been named the 2021 West Virginia Sportscaster of the Year, the National Sports Media Association announced Tuesday afternoon.

Wilson, a Marshall University graduate, is a first-time recipient of the NSMA award. He will be honored at the organization's annual banquet this June in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Wilson hosts a daily talk show, "The Talk of the Town," on 104.5 FM and 1440 AM in Morgantown. He is also the Voice of the Mohigans, calling Morgantown High School football games, in addition to serving on the broadcast teams for MetroNews coverage of the high school championships.

At Marshall, Wilson is a versatile piece of the broadcast team, serving a host, producer and play-by-play voice. Wilson has also called football games for ESPN+ streaming broadcasts produced by HerdVision, the MU athletic department's digital network.

The NSMA began handing out awards in 1959. The first West Virginia winners were Jack Fleming, who at the time worked for WAJR in Morgantown, and Dick Hudson, the longtime sports editor of the Charleston Daily Mail.

This year's state winners were both recognized by the NSMA for the first time. HD Media sportswriter and Herald-Dispatch sports editor Grant Traylor was named the 2021 West Virginia Sportswriter of the Year.

Wilson and Traylor will join an impressive list of Hall of Fame inductees and national winners.

The late Stuart Scott, who attended high school in Winston-Salem, is among the 2022 NSMA Hall of Fame class. The others are sportscaster Hubie Brown, and sportswriters Curry Kirkpatrick and Jackie MacMullan.

Turner Sports' Ernie Johnson and ESPN's Scott Van Pelt tied for the National Sportscaster of the Year award. ESPN.com's Jeff Passan will be recognized as the 2021 National Sportswriter of the Year.

The NSMA will honor its winner and Hall of Fame inductees during the organization's 62nd awards weekend and national convention, scheduled for June 25-27.
