HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (8-13, 1-7 C-USA) took down the Conference USA leading UAB Blazers (17-5, 7-2 C-USA) in an 84-81 victory on Saturday night in the Cam Henderson Center.

"We played well earlier and we had a bigger lead. We squandered it and found a way to make it exciting," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "If we get smarter we'll stay on top of everybody, but we have to cut out our mistakes."

The Herd had to step-up in the absence of junior Taevion Kinsey, who was unavailable in the contest. Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen recorded his third double-double of the season by pouring 23 points into the basket and grabbing 11 boards. The native of Lagos, Nigeria, made 11 of his 16 attempts from the field.

Senior Mikel Beyers added a season-high 19 points on a 6-for-11 shooting night, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc. The forward also had six rebounds and four assists in the win.

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor added 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds as freshman Kyle Braun put 11 points on the scoreboard.

Marshall came out of the gates outscoring UAB 13-7 in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the game. The Blazers, however, went on a 9-0 run and led 16-13 at the 12:00 mark.

The contest then saw four ties and four lead changes as MU trailed 24-22 with 6:23 left in the first half.

Braun then finished an and-one opportunity and Taylor made a jumper. After a UAB layup, Anochili-Killen tallied the next seven points. Braun followed with a three and Taylor capped off the 17-2 advantage with a lay-in as the Herd led 39-26 with just over a minute remaining until halftime. Marshall hung on to a double-digit lead, 41-30, at the break.

The Blazers scored 11 of the first 16 points of the second half as MU led 46-41.

After the two sides battled for the lead by trading runs, Beyers took the Herd on a 6-0 run that, included an and-one off a made three-pointer, to kick the home side's advantage to 12 points, 75-63, with just under eight minutes remaining.

UAB put up a valiant effort down the stretch, including a 9-0 streak to cut Marshall's lead to two points, 81-79, with 32 ticks on the clock. However, the Blazers had a pair of shots miss the mark in the final seconds as the Herd held on for the three-point victory.

NOTES
The Thundering Herd's win snapped a 10-game losing streak.

It was the first game missed by Kinsey during his collegiate career.

Anochili-Killen's 23 points and 11 rebounds each tied his career-high in both categories.

Marshall's 54.8 shooting percentage was its best of the season, besting 53.2 percentage at Akron.

The Herd made a three in its 991st consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.

Braun's 11 points marked a career-high and first double-figure scoring performance during his career at Marshall.
