NORFOLK, Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (8-14, 1-8 C-USA) fell in Norfolk to the Old Dominion Monarchs (9-12, 4-4 C-USA), 79-64, on Thursday night.
"It was all effort," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "I don't know if it's 'We beat UAB. This team is not as good so we'll just come in and win'. I don't know. I know this: the effort is not there and that's on them."
Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen paced the Herd with 15 points and eight rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor followed with 12 points and a team-best seven assists.
Senior Mikel Beyers and junior Taevion Kinsey each recorded 11 points.
Austin Trice collected a double-double for ODU with 17 points and 18 rebounds.
Sophomore Goran Miladinovic scored the opening points on a jumper in the paint 20 seconds into the contest. The two sides battled for the lead across the next four minutes with Beyers tallying a dunk and a layup to tie the game, 11-11, at the 15:02 mark.
The Monarchs went on a 19-0 run from 14:09 to 10:09 as the Herd trailed 30-11. ODU closed the half on an 8-2 run and led Marshall 50-28, its largest lead of the half, at the break.
Marshall put up a 6-0 advantage and an 8-0 streak in the second half. However, it was unable to cut too deep into the deficit as the Monarchs' lead never dipped below 15 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
NOTES
Marshall outscored ODU 36-29 in the second half.
The Herd made a three in its 992nd consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.
With a three late in the game, Kinsey extended his double-figure scoring streak to 55 consecutive games.
Beyers and Taylor have scored 10 or more points in each of their last three games.
