Men’s Basketball Drops Game in Charlotte

2/5/2022 7:21:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Box Score | D'Antoni Press Conference

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (8-15, 1-9 C-USA) dropped its contest to the Charlotte 49ers (12-9, 5-4 C-USA), 88-64, on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"The only thing I can say is we're very young, and emotionally we're very young," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "You can only give so many motivational speeches. I heard the other day, two things players are responsible for: one playing hard and two having good attitudes. Those two things they're responsible for. Coaches should not have to do that. I think we have good attitudes. I don't know that they know the level of intensity it takes to play as hard as you have to play in this league."

Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor poured a career-high 28 points through the hoop. He made 11 of his 21 attempts from the field.

Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen added 15 points on the scoreboard. The Lagos, Nigeria, native also brought down a game-high eight rebounds.

49ers guard Jahmir Young led the home team with 24 points. Young went 8-for-14 from the field, 4-for-6 on three-point attempts and went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Taylor scored the opening points for the Herd in the paint, but Charlotte tallied seven of the next 10 points to grab a 7-5 lead just over four minutes into the contest.

Marshall answered with the next four points on free throws by sophomore Goran Miladinovic and a layup Anochili-Killen to go back on top, 9-7, at the 14:55 mark.

Charlotte outscored the Herd 33-13 in the final 14 minutes of the first half. The 49ers ended the opening 20 minutes of action on a 17-5 streak as Marshall trailed 40-22 at halftime.

The Herd was unable to cut into the deficit in the second half. Charlotte had five runs of four or more points, including an 8-0 advantage, in the final 20 minutes of play. The home side led by as many as 31 points with six minutes to go in the ballgame.

NOTES
In addition to setting a career-high in points, Taylor's 11 made shots and 21 attempts were also career marks.

MU was without junior Taevion Kinsey for the second time in the last three games.

The Herd made a three in its 993rd consecutive game, with the last contest without a triple occurring on Feb. 27, 1989, in a win over App State.

Anochili-Killen has had five or more rebounds in 19 contests this season, while tallying at 10 points in 18 games.

Marshall shot 53.6 percent from the field in the second half as it made 15 of its 28 attempts from the field.

The Herd outscored the 49ers in the paint 36-30.
