HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (8-16, 1-10 C-USA) overcame a 10-point halftime deficit against the FIU Panthers (14-11, 4-8 C-USA), but fell short, 72-71, on Thursday night in the Cam Henderson Center
"It's about competitiveness," Marshall men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "You have to have the type of resolve to get it done, and we have to find the toughness as a team to be disciplined when we have to be disciplined. We have to have the confidence to make plays."
Redshirt sophomore Andrew Taylor led all scorers with 22 points. Taylor made eight of his 14 shots from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point range.
Junior Taevion Kinsey followed with 14 points on a 5-for-9 shooting night. The native of Columbus, Ohio, recorded five assists, tied with Taylor for the team-lead in the game. Freshman Obinna Anochili-Killen grabbed a game-high nine boards.
FIU's Tevin Brewer had 20 points and a game-high six assists.
FIU jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the game. However, the Herd answered with five points from Taylor, four from freshman Aymeric Toussaint and two from Anochili-Killen for an 11-0 run. After the streak, Marshall led 15-10 at the 12:29 mark.
The Panthers quickly used an 8-0 advantage to retake the lead, 18-15, less than three minutes later. The visitors kept the Herd at bay the rest of the half and closed the first 20 minutes of action on a 5-0 run. MU trailed 39-29 at the break.
In the second half, the Thundering Herd went on a 13-2 streak, including eight points by Taylor, from 16:23 to 13:46. It gave the home side its first lead, 47-45, since the 7:33 mark in the first half with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
After trading runs and the lead, Marshall led by one, 55-54, with 7:33 left on the scoreboard. Then the Panthers tallied the next eight points to take a 62-55 advantage with about five minutes remaining.
The two sides traded baskets across the next four minutes and Marshall cut the deficit to two, 70-68, with four ticks of clock left on a Taylor layup, but a pair of made free-throws by Brewer held the Herd's comeback effort short in final moments of the game.
