Second weekly award for the Herring this season
NEW ORLEANS – For the second time this season, Marshall University women's cross country senior Abby Herring has been named the Sun Belt Conference Women's Runner of the Week, as announced by the conference office Wednesday.
Herring finished second overall at the Falcon Invitational last Friday with a 6k time of 21:01.0, a new personal record. Her previous cross country 6k personal record was set at the 2021 C-USA Championships, when the senior from Parkersburg raced a time of 21:30.3.
Herring has set a new collegiate PR on three separate occasions this season. Her 5k time of 17:27.6 at the Mike Baumer Classic to open the season earned her Sun Belt Conference honors on September 7. Herring's 17:07.9 5k time at the Louisville Classic set a new Marshall women's cross country record before Friday's breakout 6k race.
"Abby ran a great race on Friday," Marshall head cross country coach Caleb Bowen said. "She went out in the lead pack, and raced with the 2020 MAC champion all the way to the finish. Abby is so stinking tough and it's just fun to watch her go out and run her race. She can do anything she sets her mind to."
Herring and the Herd cross country teams are slated for the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Saturday, October 29.
