HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The No. 9 Marshall University men's soccer team (11-3-3) used a late first-half goal from sophomore Mohammed Seidu to down the Elon Phoenix (11-5-3), 1-0, on Thursday night in Elon, North Carolina, in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament.
Graduate student goalkeeper Oliver Semmle recorded his sixth shutout of the season.
"Good win tonight," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said after the contest. "We had to balance very good possession football with the fight that we needed to defend their direct attacks. It was a very tough game, against a really well coached team. Credit to Elon, they made it tough. But this was a great moment for our guys, to match the fight and then be calm to play on the ball. To a man, we showed we were up to the test."
It was a long feeling out process between the two sides. The first shot on goal didn't come until the 31st minute when Oliver Semmle stopped an Elon shot by Jack Dolk.
Herd redshirt senior Milo Yosef then fired a ball on target off a free kick at the 42:17 mark, but it was saved by Phoenix keeper Ryan Bilichuk.
Marshall was then awarded a corner with just over two minutes left in the first half. Senior Gabriel Alves sent in the ball and found Seidu, who headed home the pass for his first goal of the season to put MU up 1-0 in the 44th minute.
Elon sent a shot off target in the 45th minute as the Herd held on to a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Freshman Matthew Bell opened the second half with a shot that was saved at the 51:32 mark as Semmle answered the call with a save a minute later.
Semmle came up with another huge save in the 60th minute as the Marshall defense keep Elon away from the visiting goal to hold on to the shutout.
