HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (3-1) went wire-to-wire for its third straight win in an 86-67 defeat of the Coppin State Eagles (3-3) on Saturday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
"That was a good ball club," Herd men's basketball head coach Dan D'Antoni said about Coppin State after the win. "They won three straight and took Georgetown to overtime at Georgetown. I thought we played well."
Fifth-year senior Taevion Kinsey fell a pair of assists and rebounds shy of a triple-double as he tallied a game-high 23 points with eight rebounds and eight assists. The Columbus, Ohio, native went 10-for-20 from the field.
With 15 points and 11 rebounds, junior Obinna Anochili-Killen registered the fifth double-double of his career on a 7-for-10 night from the field. Redshirt senior Andrew Taylor added 14 points in the contest.
The Herd wasted no time getting on top as it started on a 9-0 run led by freshman Micah Handlogten scoring six of his nine points in the contest as part of the run.
The Eagles chipped away at the Marshall advantage until the visitors tied the contest, 30-30, with 5:23 left in the opening 20 minutes of play.
However, MU didn't want to go down as it answered by scoring 17 of the final 19 points in the half, including Anochili-Killen tallying the final seven points in the half, to go up 47-32 at the break.
Marshall's lead never dipped below 10 points in the second half as it cruised to the 86-67 win.
The Herd outrebounded the Eagles 49-33 and forced 20 turnovers to committing just 11.
