Marshall awaits bowl game invitation

HUNTINGTON, W.Va- The Marshall Thundering Herd picked up their eighth win of the season in come from behind fashion, defeating Georgia State, 28-23 Saturday afternoon.

Redshirt-freshman quarterback Cam Fancher finished with 277 all-purpose yards, throwing for two touchdowns, completing 18 of 28 passes.

The Panthers (4-8, 3-5 Sun Belt) opened the game with a 55 yard completion on the first play from scrimmage. GSU scored to go up 7-0 early. The Herd offense moved the ball early, but a pair of missed field goals left Marshall trailing by a touchdown after the first.

With the green and white trailing 10-0 in the second, sixth-year senior Khalan Laborn provided an immediate spark as he has all season long. Laborn took a hand off to the right side and rushed past a blitzing Panthers defense for an 83 yard score. The Virginia Beach native's previously longest touchdown of the season was 78 yards against Gardner Webb.

Following a three and out, Cam Fancher and the offense continued the momentum. A pair of 13 and 23 yard scrambles from the freshman quarterback set up sophomore Rasheen Ali's first touchdown of the season. The late score gave the Herd a 14-10 halftime lead.

Georgia State scored in a defensive third quarter to take a 17-14 lead entering the final frame, but Head Coach Charles Huff's side threw the final pair of punches.

A Fancher pass down the right sideline to E.J. Horton for 33 yards jump started a quick five play, 76 yard scoring drive. Fancher found Charles Montgomery on a 32 yard score on the next play to give the Herd a 21-17 lead.

The Marshall defense responded accordingly. Three consecutive sacks from Owen Porter, Eli Neal, and Koby Cumberlander exploded the Joan C. Edwards crowd of 17,427.

Ali and the Thundering Herd offense responded with a 33 yard run after the ensuing punt to get the Herd inside the GSU 10. Laborn rushed in his second score to put Marshall up 28-17.

The Panthers scored with 3:45 remaining, only for Ali, Laborn, and the offense to run out the remaining clock. Laborn, the sixth year senior, finished with 100 yards exactly, for his ninth 100+ yard rushing game of the season. He and 20 other seniors honored Saturday leave Joan C. Edwards Stadium on a winning note.
