Herd Men’s Basketball Hosts App State for Sun Belt Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University men's basketball team (11-2) opens Sun Belt Conference action against the App State Mountaineers (7-6) on Thursday night in Huntington.

We will also be honoring Bruce Morris' "Shot Herd 'Round the World" on Thursday night.

The Herd comes out of the Christmas break off a 99-73 win over the Glenville State Pioneers on December 19.
The contest marked the fifth time this season that the Herd had five student-athletes reach double-figure scoring.
Marshall closed out non-conference play with an 11-2 record, tied with Southern Miss for the best record in the conference. It's the team's best start in non-conference play since the 2009-10 season when the team also went 11-2.
Freshman Micah Handlogten recorded his fourth of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Handlogten has 143 rebounds this season, fourth most in Division I men's basketball, while his 34 blocks rank seventh.
Fifth-year senior Taevion Kinsey is the only player in the country averaging at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. The Columbus, Ohio, native ranks fifth in the country in points scored with 275 through 13 games.
As a team, Marshall sits in the top 10 nationally in a few statistics as it leads the country in offensive rebounds per game (15.54), ranks second in rebounds per game (43.69), fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.61), and is seventh in assists per game (19.2).
SCOUTING APP STATE
The Mountaineers are coming off a 61-50 loss to UC Santa Barbara on December 21 in Phoenix.
App State leads the Sun Belt in defensive field-goal percentage as it holds opponents to just 38.3 percent shooting from the field.
Justin Abson sits in 14th, second in the conference, with 31 blocks this season.
Donovan Gregory leads his side with 12.3 points and 3.8 assists per game. Gregory scored a season-high 21 points against Campbell on November 18.
