Marshall Thunders Back from 12-Point Deficit to Defeat App State

12/31/2022 6:19:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Herd outscores App State by 16 in second half

Box Score | Coach Kemper Post Game

BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall Thundering Herd found a way to "Make it their day." Saturday against the App State Mountaineers.

Trailing by nine at the half, and by as many as 12 in the first half, Head Coach Tony Kemper's side outscored the hosts by 16 in the second half to win 59-52, improving its Sun Belt record to 2-0, and 9-4 overall.

"We played tremendous defense in a long stretch there in a period where we had to do that because the offense was pretty hard for a while," Kemper said. "I thought Mahogany Matthews was really good in the second half. She finished with 14 points, 15 rebounds. Huge win, we talked about the opportunity to go 2-0 on the road. There were not a lot of teams in the league with that opportunity. It is very difficult to win on the road."

Mahogany's 15 rebounds were the most by a Marshall player since Ashley Saintigene had 16 against Longwood on November 10, 2017. Roshala Scott also finished in double-figure scoring, leading MU with 18 points.

App State (5-8, 1-1 Sun Belt) shot 40 percent from deep in the first half, forcing six Herd turnovers. The Mountaineers held Marshall to 20 first-half points, with no Marshall players in double figures at halftime.

The Matthews and Scott duo kickstarted the comeback, scoring the team's first 13 points to open the second half, trimming an 11 point deficit to five. A layup from Aarionna Redman and a three from Terah Harness closed out the quarter with Marshall only trailing by two, 40-38. Redman tied a new career-high with eight points.

The Herd took over with a 9-0 run to open the final quarter with consecutive Redman triples to boost Marshall in front. The Herd also cleaned up the boards in the second half, outrebounding the Mountaineers 21-12 in the third and fourth quarters. App State had doubled up Marshall in the opening half on the glass.

Marshall led by as much as 12 in the fourth after Roshala Scott converted an and-one opportunity. App State closed in late, but Marshall left Boone's 3,333 foot elevation with the seven point victory to close 2022.
